I Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 7,1990 9 Reading Circle Promotes Interest in Books Mary Ann Allin's three daughters (from left: Nicole, 6, Emily, 2, and Juliana, 4) enjoy spending time reading and looking at the pictures in books. However, many children and adults alike either can't read or aren't interested in reading. For that reason, Mrs. Allin has organized a reading circle to be held on February 14 to generate generate and nurture an interest in reading for children. It will be held at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville from 7 to 8 p.m. If you would like more information on the evening, contact Mrs. Allin at 623-3619. ELEANOR DAMANT, GAYLE WINDSOR Serving Bowmanville and Area Since 1893 by Andrea Adair Childhood can be a pretty magical time. It's the one stage in your life when animals animals can talk and princesses can slay dragons. For children, the adventure adventure doesn't start when the television gets turned on. Their adventure begins when they open the pages of a book. But, if someone can't read or isn't interested in reading, reading, opportunities are missed. Maiy Ann Allin, a Bowmanville Bowmanville resident, knows how important reading is for her and her three daughters and is amazed that so many people in Canada can't read. To get children interested in the enjoyment, mystery and excitement books can provide she has organized a reading circle. A reading circle helps to bring reading into the lives of children outside of school. Once a week, people can get together and adults can read for an hour to their children. Or the children can read to themselves. The intent of the circle is to get children interested in reading rather than teaching teaching reading skills. But, Read Canada believes that if a child likes to read, he or shé will do it more often and eventually will become a better reader. Mrs. Allin was interested in organizing a reading circle circle in this area after attending attending a national conference for Child's Play, an organiza-. tion that specializes in educational educational books and games for children. At the conference, a guest speaker talked about the problems of illiteracy in Canada and how Frontier College and Read Canada were trying to decrease the numbers of persons who cannot read. Frontier College is an organization organization that teaches adults to read and write while the focus for Read Canada is on children. "The idea behind reading circles," Mrs. Allin explains, "Is that reading becomes part of everyday life and is accessible to everyone." broken Save i?"™" hmttisfucr- J" Offer valid for most cars and insurance companies Expires February 20,1990Ji '^1 Auto Glo// "YOUR ( mu Bi il MAN ill 1 A 111 I OP" UXBRIDGE, PORT PERRY, LINDSAY, PETERBOROUGH, CAMPBELLFORD Call Us Today For All Your Glass Needs AUTO GLASS • COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL PLATE GLASS • SAFETY GLASS She adds that it isn't a new idea. In 1897 a man named Alfred Alfred Fitzpatrick set up tents in lumber camps, mining towns and railroad camps in Canada so people could nave a place to go to read and to learn. What he started eventually eventually became known as Frontier Frontier College. An offshoot of the college is Read Canada. Last year in Ottawa, on July 1, a reading tent was set up where a number of different people came out to read to children. Prime Minister Minister Brian Mulroney and Mila Mulroney were just some of the celebrities who participated. Mrs. Allin is hoping that the idea will catch on in the community and succeed. She said she enjoys reading reading herself even though she isn't an avid redder and she admits that people sometimes sometimes take literacy for granted. granted. She said illiteracy is a disability but is also preventable. preventable. "I would hope people aren't going to leave high school any more without knowing how to read," she said. A step to somehow preventing preventing this is early exposure exposure to books for children. She said she often hears parents complain about the school system but adds that the parents and the community community must help to foster children's children's interest in learning. For her part, she has organized organized a reading night at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville on Februa: 14 from 7-8 p.m. which al children are welcome to attend. attend. A special celebrity guest, Newcastle Mayor Marie Hubbard has .volunteered to read the firsft night. After this night, Mrs. Allin Allin is trying to make the reading circle a weekly event with dates and locations locations to be announced later. Being in a business that deals with reading, Mrs. Allin Allin knows what she is talk- , ing about. Child's Play deals with the educational process of learning through books. During International Literacy Literacy Year, if you don't already already share in your child's reading time or even if you do, toting part in the reading reading circle this month may be a good idea. You could be helping to foster a lifelong friendship between your child and books. And what better day to do it than on Valentine's Day?
