SWIMMERS COMPETE AT PROVINCIALS- Three swimmers from the Newcastle Aquatic Club will be competing at the Provincial Championships in Nepean, on February 23, 24, 25. Tara.Arnott will compete compete in the 50,100' and 200 metre' breaststroke. Tracy Arnott will be competing in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke. Toby Limebeer will be busy as he will be . competing in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle, 100 and 200 metre butterfly, 100 and 200 metre breaststroke, and 200 individual medley. COURTICE BASKETBALL TRIP TO EUROPE-- . Both the Senior Boys' and Girls' Basketball teams of '. Courtice High School will be travelling to Europe from March 10-19, playing in cities such as Hieldeberg, Venice, Munich, Lucerne and Frankfurt. The teams i have been very busy with fund-raising efforts, in an .attempt to reduce some of the costs involved. Half way into the period. Danny MacDonald rushed in fast, splitting the wings' defence for his third goal of the game. The Redwings came back with a quick goal. With the score at 3 to 2 the Redwings Redwings fought hard to tie the game but Adam and Eve's goalie David Clark came up big with some great saves keeping the Redwings from scoring. Awesome Offence for Red Eagles The Bowmanville Junior C's are in command of their first series in their quest for All-Ontario honours. The pesky Cobourg Cougars who have made it difficult for several teams lately are not giving up easily. The Red Eagles offence has been awesome over the past two games, netting a total of 21 goals. On Sunday night, the local local boys got off to a quick start with David Fahey's goal from Rohr and Pithie at 1:49, followed by Rohr from Pithie and D. Armstrong 14 seconds later. Brad Robinson Robinson lit the light again 51 seconds seconds after that from Stone and Allenby. Cobourg replied replied with a pair, one on the power play. The Eagles re 'ed with a spondee pair, Fairey from Rohr and Allenby, and Shmyr from Campbell and Perris. They traded goals to close out the period at 6-3 Bowmanville. At 4:35 of the third, Shmyr stole the puck to net an unassisted, short-handed goal. The Cougars found the net on the power play, foiling foiling Scott Webster's shut-out bid. EAST OF COURTICE ROAD After winning three house league games in a row, the 401 Esso team met with the league leading J & J team on Saturday, January January 27. It turned out to be an excellent game, with both teams being veiy evenly matched. Although the final score ended at 6 - 3, both, teams held the lead at different different points during the game, and only one goal separated separated the teams until the final two minutes of play. Both teams are to be congratulated congratulated for their entertaining entertaining hockey. Early in the first period. J & J got on the scoreboard with a quick shot from tho right side. Trevor Wright evened tho score at 1 - 1 a few minutes later with a nice shot from the left side. Three minutes later Scott MacKay worked his way through tight traffic and beat tho J & J goalie with a nice drive along tho ico. This gave 401 thoir only lend of tho game ns the first period ended at 2 - 1, thanks to some solid gonltonding by Brandon Ronton in tho Esso goal. During tho second period both goalies made some excellent excellent saves and both teams took turns dominating tho play. Near the end of the period period J & J put the pressure on and trapped Esso in their end. With 3:46 left in the period period J & J scored to tie the game. Both teams exchanged goals in the first half of the third period, with Darryl Cook scoring the Esso goal, assisted by Ted Fitzgerald. J & J went ahead 4 - 3 with 7:57 remaining in the game. For the next six minutes the play was very close and Esso missed on some excellent scoring opportunities. Finally, Finally, J & J scored two quick goals in tho last two minutes minutes of play to wrap up the game with a 6 ■ 3 victory, Nice try, 401 Esso! On Saturday, February 3. 401 Esso met the second place Carnation team. Thoir hopes of moving up in tho standings were delayed with an 8 - 4 loss. Tho 401 Esso boys wore unable to close tho gap in tho third period, and when tho final buzzer sounded tho score was 8 - 4 for Carnation. Carnation. Esso's final goal came from Paul Drummond on a hard shot from tho slot, assisted assisted by Joff Carter. Mr. Sub played three games this weekend and recorded recorded two victories. The final Sub goal was scored when Clayton passed it along the blue line to Chad who let the puck fly through a crowd and into the net. The final score read Sub 4 and Big "E" 1. This game was closer than the score indicated. Later on Saturday, the Sub boys travelled to Orono to play the N.A.S.C. peewee select team. The Sub boys came out of the gate fast with Chad Veinot scoring an unassisted goal. The. N.A.S.C. selects then started to use their size and quickness quickness to score five unanswered unanswered goals. The Sub boys got back on the board when Rick Swale got the puck in front of the net to Clayton Guest, with Clayton sliding the puck under the goalie and into the net. Chad notched the 3rd Sub goal wheh Tim Forret let a slap shot go from the point that the select goalie couldn't handle and Chad grabbing the rebound lifted the puck over the goalie and into the net. The game started to get on the dirty side with players on both teams taking taking runs at each other. The N.A.S.C. Selects then scored ' with time running out to post a 6 - 3 victory. The Sub' boys should be happy with their play as they didn't give up when it looked like they would be run out of the are na. On Sun., Feb. 4, the Sub boys hit the ice at Darlington Darlington with Simcoe Street being being their opposition. The Sim boys started fast with Rob Watson getting the goal with Darren Allin and Justin Justin Vance getting the assist. Chad Veinot scored on a passing play from Rick Swale and Tim Forret. David David Vernon notched the 3rd Sub goal. The fourth goal was scored when Justin passed to Les and Les over to Rob who deked the goalie. There was no scoring in the second period. Rob scored early in the third period when he stole the puck off a Simcoe Street player and skated past two defensemen, before sliding the pick into the net. The sixth Sub goal was scored when the Sub players jammed up the Simcoe Simcoe goal crease and Ryan Kohn put the puck past the goalie. David and Chad picked up the assist. The 7th Sub goal was scored when Tim passed down the middle to a breaking Chad who broke around the defence before before slipping the puck past the goalie. With the Sub boys playing playing a man short, the Simcoe boys got on the board. With time getting short Tim For- ret passed the puck to Les, who skated up the boards, passed over to Rob, who made no mistake in notching notching his 4th goal of the game. The final score was Mr. Sub 8 and Simcoe Street 1.
