February 14,1990 17 Reader Responds: To Recent Letter Letter to Helen Schmid of Orono Dear John: ' Seems as if you are hav- . ing quite a time Johnny ' with all the mail you are receiving. receiving. I sure got a chuckle _ out of the one from Helen ! Schmid of Orono. It's nice to know she is a booster of . Bowmanville. If the Region has picked , Orono, then walked in and • took over their community . hall, tore it down and built a new one on the spot and named it Newcastle we sure • would have heard some howling and whining back . that way. Better still it would have . been better if the region had picked out Newcastle Village Village Community Hall for their home base. We then could have taken down the Bowmanville hall and the Legion boys could have had a really nice place to hold their Armistice ceremonies with lots of room and a nice ~ park for seniors and cripples like me to sit down. Having lived here almost 75 years, it kind of stuck in my throat to be termed a whiner, cause I'm damned mad to think this was all done without the people of Bowmanville having at least a vote to cast. Yes, Helen Schmid, the Town Hall was not all as lots of the other equipment was paid for out of my taxes. One final shot, the Mayor does not know any more than I do what the cost of changing the name would be. If you wish a category, I think it is' termed bitching. And I'll carry on if I feel like it. Too bad Orme Gamsby is not around. Keep the petitions going folks, and this time send one to the Province of Ontario, not have them shoved in a ' desk drawer. Yours truly. ' Robert Kent P.S. Regional Government Government stinks too. ' Council Actions Disturb Reader Dear Sir: I continue to read letters to the Editor bemoaning the activities of our Council, items such as: (a) trips to Hong Kong for which we are ' still awaiting some return on the investment; (b) a hefty pay increase; and (c) priorities on money spent on local projects., ; Regarding this last topic, I have written two letters to our Council regarding the ; proposal of installing two floodlit baseball diamonds in the new Sports Complex, and the actual installation of floodlighting at the Soper Creek Park oaseball diamond. diamond. The Soper Creek item is my prime concern. My first letter to Council written on November 17. 1989 before any substantial work was started at Soper Creek Questioned the need for floodlighting at this diamond, diamond, since it is only used to approximately 50% of its full potential during evenings and weekends. This letter was answered by the Mayor stating that the installation costs were being funded from the parkland parkland reserve fund which comes from the private sector, sector, with the operating expenses expenses being borne by the user. However, as the park has free time available for games to be played during daylight hours, I fail to see who will pay. There were several other points the Mayor made which I questioned in a subsequent subsequent letter to Council dated December 4,1989, but for the sake of brevity, these will not be mentioned here. As of this date, Februaiy 7, 1990 I have not received a reply to my second letter. However, the work has continued continued at Soper Creek baseball baseball diamond and the floodlighting floodlighting is virtually complete. So much for listening listening to the people! I felt duty bound to inform inform fellow residents in the area of how money is being spent, and what to expect it you question the Council.'If we re-elect this same Council Council for n second term, we deserve deserve all wo get. Finally, I would like to suggest to all residents that they write to our Council requesting requesting that on the next election there be a plebiscite which states that the Council Council cannot vote a pay increase increase for themselves or subsequent subsequent Councils of more • than 5% per year. This would put them more in line with some of the luckier residents residents in the area. Most of us have, in fact, seen our pay cheques decrease in recent recent years, Yours truly, George Latter.
