Tho teams record is now 32 wins 6 losses and 1 tie. by Brad Kelly One of Bowmanville's most famous runners was paid a tribute in his hometown hometown of Horsham, England recently. The Broadbridge Heath Sports Centre unveiled a larger-than-life painting along with a plaque in honour honour of world class runner, the late Alfie Shrubb. In attendance at the ceremony ceremony was Alfie's daughter, Nora Allin, of Bowmanville. Alfie was born on December December 12, 1879, and came to live in Bowmanville in 1928. During the mid 1950's and early 1960's, he resided on Simpson Avenue and was in charoe of the Cream of Barley Barley Camp, which is now the Bowmanville Zoo. While in his prime, from 1901-06, Alfie was termed as 'one of the greatest champions champions of the 20th century'. His career covered a span of 32 years, with his last race at the CNE in 1931 against Indian marathon runner, Tom Longboat. At the time of the race, Longboat was 48, while Alfie was 51. Alfie was a natural runner runner who entered the field of athletics by accident. While hearing a fire wagon go by his house as a youngster, Alfie Alfie darted to the scene of the fire, leaving the fire wagon behind. A secretary for a harrier club saw this amazing amazing display of speed, and persuaded him to begin training as a runner. In his heyday from 1901- 06, Alfie established 12 amateur amateur world records in distances distances ranging from 1.5 miles to 10 miles. As a middle middle distance runner, he held the British Isles record from 1901-02 for the mile with a clocking of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. This is an outstanding outstanding time considering that with the improved training techniques and advances in track conditions that present day runners enjoy, the current world record is only 30 seconds faster than the time ran by Alfie. His greatest achievement was the world distance record he set in 1904, as he covered a distance of 11 miles, 1,137 yards in a one hour time limit. It was a record that wasn't broken until 1951. In 1903 he turned pro and dominated the circuit in distances covering 2-15 miles. In most of the races Alfie competed in, he was given a handicap of as much as eight minutes. His specialty specialty during his pro career was the 15 mile. His most famous races pitted him in head-to-head competitions against Tom Longboat. Alfie beat Tom in 10 out of 12 races in distances distances covering 1-26 miles. One of his losses came in a 26 mile marathon race in 1926 at Madison Square Gardens in New York. After taking a commanding lead at the 22 mile mark, Alfie was forced to retire from the race as the smoke-filled arena arena made him feel nauseated. For a period of eight years, 1920-28, Alfie was a track coach at Oxford University University where his teams enjoyed enjoyed great success. Always a showman, Alfie once competed in a 15 mile race in Buffalo, N.Y. against Billy Sherring, of Hamilton. Billy happened to be the gold medal winner in the marathon at the 1906 Olympic Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. After finishing the race six laps ahead of Billy, Alfie bolted to the dressing room and emerged with a camera to take a picture of his opponent opponent finishing the race. In one of his more unusual unusual races, Alfie defeated two horses in a 10 mile race. The horses ran the race as a relay, relay, with each one running five miles, while Alfie ran the full 10. In 1962, at the ripe old age of 82, Alfie was asked to go to Boston to see two well respected heart specialists. Although there was nothing wrong with him physically, the specialist's wanted to examine examine Alfie to see how his heart had reacted to all of the athletic activity he had endured over the years. A contemporary writer once wrote: "No matter how hard may be the contest in which Shrubb has taken part, he never seems short to wind. Indeed, for Shrubb to get out of breath seems practically impossible." Un April 23, 1964 Alfie passed away at the age of 84.
