I ( 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 28,1990 Team Heads South for Spring Training by Brad Kelly While many of us spend the second week of March outside with gloves on, some Bowmanville youngsters will be wearing gloves for a different climate. Baseball gloves. A total of 19 players and four coaches will be trading in their winter gloves for the warmer climate of St. Petersburg, Petersburg, Florida. The group will spend 10 days under the Florida sun sharpening their baseball skills from March 8-18. "This will be the first time a Bowmanville team has made the trip during this time of year," explained coach Terry Donohue during an indoor work-out at Cour- tice High School. "I've been going down with Sam Dempster (coach of the Eastdale High School baseball team) for the past five years. We talked about taking a Bowmanville team down before, but it never came about." The bulk of the team will be made up of players who were on the Canadian Tire midget baseball team last year, with the addition of four players who are overage. overage. The team will be housed at the Southeast Little League Headquarters in St. Petes, with teams from throughout Canada and the United States. The complex includes four baseball diamonds, diamonds, batting cages, and 14 dorms. The Sub boys came out of the gate fast with Chad Veinot stealing the puck and scoring scoring easily. The 7th Sub goal was scored when Rob got the puck from Brian and let the puck go from the point. The goalie stopped it but could not control the puck. The final score was Sub 8, Dykstras 4. The Sub team is hoping that Darren Donohue has broken out of his scoring slump. Both Jeff Crawford in the Sub net and Steve Sargent in the Dykstra's net were forced to make many great saves, as this was a very offensive offensive game. , On Sunday, February 24. the Mr. Sub team played Harmony Church at the Newcastle Arena. Harmony Church notched their first goal of the game. This didn't slow down the Sub boys as Brian Thornton scored on a set-up from Darren Darren Allin. One of the players making making the trip to Florida is Rob Stevenson, who will be playing playing for the Bowmanville Junior team, as well as the Bowmanville- High School team this spring. "I want to improve my skill at the bat and in the field while I'm there. I want to get more power at the bat, maybe? 1 try to get the ball through tne infield," he said with a grin. Another player, left- handed pitcher Glenn Wagg, is also looking forward to the trip. "I want to improve my pitching, especially my accuracy accuracy and I also want to learn more pitches." Both players would like to further their baseball careers careers by playing at the university university level in the States. With a free education, and a chance to play at a competitive competitive level, one can hardly blame them. Terry would like to see a facility that could be used for indoor baseball workouts workouts included in the new facility facility that is proposed for Courtice. Not to be used strictly for baseball, the facility facility could double as tennis, volleyball, or badminton courts. Remax wasted little little time, scoring one goal in the first period. Sunday morning saw T- Mac facing off against Carnation. Carnation. Morning games seem to be when our boys perform best.
