Both teams came up with outstanding games to win the championship championship at the U.C.G.H.A. tournament tournament in Hastings. The U.C. bantams, coached by Terry Rowland held off a strong Scarborough Scarborough team, winning the finals finals 2-1. Bantam Girls Qualify For Provincials U.C. defeated Peterborough Peterborough to earn the right to represent this area in the Ontario Women's Hockey Association bantam division for the provincial title on April 6-8. The team split the first two games. U.C. won the first game 3-1, goals scored by Julie Mather, Heather Richardson and Rhonda McMillan with two assists by Richardson, and one assist assist each by Suzanne Brooks and Deeann Dennee. Atom hockey hockey team sponsored by J&J Sharpening ended their regular regular season of play with one win, one tie ana one loss giving giving them a solid hold on second second place in their division. The win came on Thursday, Thursday, March 8th, when they faced off against the team sponsored by Hutton Transport. Transport. Jamie Powell, usually found on the J&J forward' lines, chose to stand between between the pipes for his team and performed admirably coming close to earning his first shutout. , The J&J Atoms took control control of the game right from the start and notched two goals in the first period. Colin Colin Galinski got the score- keeper working when he made use of assists from Stephen Wraith and Brian Ball. Jumpin' Chris Oyler netted the second goal late .in the opening period. Greg Masterson, assisted by Nick Zdravkovski, earned the assists. assists. It wasn't until the third period that the scorekeeper was again put to work. In the first minute of that period, period, Greg Masterson, assisted by Nick Zdravkovski, gave the J&J Atoms a comfortable comfortable three goal lead. With only a minute and a half to play, it looked as though the 3-0 score was going to hold. The next game for the J&J Atoms came two days later, on Saturday March 10th. This game, which ended ended in a tie, was played against the team sponsored by Remax Realty. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, early in the second period, the J&J Atoms found themselves down two goals. However, they made it clear that they were not about to accept defeat as they rallied to get on the scoreboard. Chns Oyler earned their important important first goal using assists assists from Grant Gushalak and Jerémy Sanders. In spite of some impressive forechecking and solid blue lining, the J&J Atoms were mg, able score during the second period, period, while the Hutton Atoms notched one more to give them the 3-1 lead. To the credit of the J&J players, they continued to play aggressive but clean hockey that allowed them to g ain control of the game. luring the third period, the J&J defensive lines of Brad Johnson, Brad MacMaster, Colin Galinski and Phil Gu- shulak managed to shut down the Hutton scorers. Meanwhile Chris Oyler and Brian Ball each earned one goal to tie the game. Jeremy Sanders and Brad Johnson assisted on Chris'goal while Chris Oyler and Greg Masterson Masterson assisted on Brian's goal. Brian's tieing goal came with only one minute left in the game, bringing the J&J fans to their feet! Later that day, the J&J Atoms travelled to the Newcastle Newcastle arena to face off_ against the team sponsored ' by Carnation Flowers. In spite of an excellent effort from all players, they were unable to end their regular season with a win. Carnation Carnation was able to notch an im pressive ten goals, while the J&J Atoms scored four. The four J&J goals were scored by Darren Crawford, Greg Masterson, Phil Gushulak and Colin Galinski. Bowmanville Kinks (formerly (formerly TeePee Sportswear Oldtimers) held their second annual hockey tournament on Saturday 3 March at the BRC. In the A Division, Uxbridge Uxbridge Oilies defeated Lon- don-Lambeth Blue 4 to 3. In the B Division, Brooking Brooking Transport defeated Rose- dale Restaurant (Durham Police) 2 to 1. Tournament's valuable player for the Bowmanville Bowmanville squad was Jim Noble Noble (1 goal, 2 assists) and for the coppers was P. Paymen (1 goal, 2 assists). Bingo Arts defeated Hutton Hutton Transport 4 to 1 to capture capture the C Division 'title. Tournament valuable players were Wayne Harness Harness (1 goal, 2 assists) and Mitch Cloutnier (4 goals). The next Sub goal was scored after some nice passing from Clayton Guest to Ryan Kohn who passed to Rick Swale who scored his 2nd goal of the game. This, looked like an easy win for the Sub boys but they quit hitting, allowing Big "E" to notch three unanswered goals. The final score was Big "E" 3 Mr. Sub 2. On Saturday, March 10 the Sub boys faced off against Checkers at the Bowmanville Arena. The Checkers boys scored two goals in the 1st period and then played a good defensive game, skating to a 2 to 0 victory. victory. Later that Saturday, the Sub boys headed to Orono to play Thornton Dundee of the N.A.S.C. The Sub boys went into this game with only nine skaters. The Thornton boys hit the scoreboard first, and it looked like their physical physical size was too much for the Sub team. Clayton Guest tied up the score when he knocked the puck under the Thornton goalie. Rick Swale and Brian Thornton picked up the assist. assist. Chad Veinot then hurt his ankle and had to leave the game. Rick Swale headed headed for the penalty box putting putting the Sub boys down to seven skaters, but true grit they kept Thornton from scoring until Chad could return. return. Chad then picked up a loose puck, skated in and let a shot go that David Vernon easily picked off to notch the 2nd Sub goal. The 3rd Sub goal was scored when Les McCrory picked up the puck in his own end, skated down the boards before picking the open corner of the net. The 4th Sub goal was scored by David Vernon with assist going to Rick and Les. The 5th Sub goal was scored when Justin Vance grabbed the puck, skated down ice, letting a wrist shot go that the goalie deflected deflected to David who easily picked up his hat trick. The 6th Sub goal was scored when Tim Forret let a shot go that Chad picked off and shot over the goalie and into the net. The final Sub goal was scored when Chad let a blast go, with Brian Thornton grabbing the rebound to easily get the goal. This game showed tha, hard work pays as the Sub boys posted a 7 to 1 victory. On Sunday, March 11, the Mr. Sub team played No tre Dame of the UYU at Newcastle Arena. The Notre Dame team notched the 1st goal of the game while playing playing short handed. Chad Veinot Veinot tied up the score with a nice wrap around play. Notre Notre Dame then scored at the end of the 1st period. The Sub boys tied up the game when Les took a slap shot that the goalie didn't hold, allowing Darren Allin to grab the loose puck and slip it under the goalie. The Sub boys took the lead when Rick passed to Justin who let a nice wrist shot go, easily easily beating the goalie. Chad intercepted a Notre Dame pass to break in alone on the goalie, Chad then deked the goalie out, slipping the puck past the post ana into the net. The Notre Dame team wasn't dead as they notched their 3rd goal early in the 3rd period. The Sub boys got back their 2 goal bulge when David passed to Rick who split the defense and lifted the puck over the goalie and into the net. The Sub boys were forced to play this game with a small bench due to vacations and would like to thank Curtis Cour- neyea for filling in on defence. defence.
