Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, March 28,1990 5 J & J Sharpening Posts Two Wins In First Games of Playoff Schedule Mr. Sub Pee Wees are Runners-Up in Times Tourney The B.K.H.L. atom team sponsored by J&J Sharpening Sharpening began their playoff schedule last weekend with two wins! The first win came ■ on Saturday, March 17th, when they faced off against the team sponsored by Hut- ' ton Transport. In this well matched competition, the • spectators were treated to excellent, exciting hockey that included super passing ; and positional play by both teams. i The opening period ap- ' peared as though it would '} remain scoreless when at the 1:18 mark, defenceman i. Phil Gushulak got J&J on the board when he made use of assistance from Jamie 1 Powell and Greg Masterson. In spite of some excellent opportunities opportunities in the second pe- ; riod, that goal stood alone up until the last five minutes minutes of the third period. At that point, the shutout that J&J goalie, Nick Zdravkov- ski was hoping for, was taken taken when Hutton found an ,, opening in his net. The Mr. Sub peewee team spent their March break at the Oshawa Times Tournament. The boys entered entered this tournament missing missing their no. 1 and no. 3 scorers; Rob Watson and Darren Donohue. The coaching coaching staff had high hopes based on the past two games. On Tuesday, March 13 the opposition was North. Oshawa. The Sub boys hit early, with David Vernon scoring on a set-up from Darren Allin. At the end of the 1st period, Ryan Kohn passed to Chad Veinot who blasted the puck into the Oshawa net. The 3rd Sub goal was scored when Darren passed back to Tim at the point who let a blast go that the goalie couldn't handle, allowing Chad to get the loose puck and plant it into the net. The 4th Sub goal was scored when Justin passed to Brian Thornton, to Clayton Guest who lifted the puck into the net. The 5th Sub goal was a carbon copy of the 4th with Justin to Brian except this time Darren Allin scored the goal. The next Sub goal was scored when Tim Forret passed to Justin who skated through the Oshawa team before slipping the puck under under the goalie. The 7th Sub goal was scored when the Oshawa defence defence tried to get the puck out of their end, but Les held it in and shot at the net and Clayton grabbed the rebound rebound to score his 2nd goal of the game. The final goal of the game was scored by Les as he skated down the boards and picked the opening opening in the Oshawa net. Chad and Darren picked up the assist. Jeff Crawford recorded recorded the shut out in the Sub net. Final score Mr. Sub 8, North Oshawa 0. On Wednesday, March 14, the Sub boys faced off against Thornton Dundee. The Thornton team caught the Subs napping as they scored early in the 1st period. period. Chad tied the game up late in the 1st period with David Vernon and Darren Allin getting the assist. The 2nd Sub goal was a pass from Clayton to Chad, over to Ryan who broke past the Oshawa defence and then lifted the puck over the goal ie and into the net. The 3rd goal was scored on a passing play from Les to Rick to David David and into the net. The last Sub goal was the same as the 1st with Chad scoring scoring the goal with David and Darren obtaining the assist. The Sub boys were starting to come together.as a team. The final score was Mr. Sub 4, Thornton Dundee 1. The 3rd game of the tournament tournament was played on Thursday, March 15 with the opposition being Lange's Photo from Bowman ville. The coaching staff for Mr. Sub went over with the boys who to keep an eye on. After two periods the score was 0 to 0. Between the 2nd and 3rd period, the coaches told the boys that they only needed one goal to win the game. Both teams started the 3rd period waiting for the other to make the big mistake. At the 5:05 mark of the 3rd period Darren Allin jumped on a loose puck and lifted it over Clayton Ren- dell, into the Lange's net with Brian and Rick picking up the assist. The Sub boys then finished the game by putting a defensive blanket over the Lange team. Chad Veinot assisted Les, Justin and Tim on defence in the last three minutes. Jeff Crawford recorded the shutout. shutout. It was too bad that this was Lange's 3rd game which meant they were out of the tournament as they played a great game. In the 4th game, Mr. Submarine Submarine found themselves up against Christ Church. The Sub boys knew that Christ Church had defeated Checkers Checkers from Bowmanville so they were out to get revenge for the B.R.H.L. Neither team could manage to score in the first period. Ryan slid the puck under the goalie goalie and into the net. The 2nd Sub goal was picture perfect as Ryan passed to Rick out to Clayton in front of the net with Clayton one timing it past the goalie. Clayton scored the 3rd Sub goal when Tim let a blast go from the point that the goalie dropped allowing Clayton to push it into the net. The 4th Sub goal was scored on another another nice passing play from David to Chad to Darren at the side of the net who had no problem scoring. It looked like another shut-out for the Sub as there was less than two minutes to go in the game, but Christ Church never quit as they notched two goals to change the final score to Sub 4, Christ Church 2. ' The "A" Championship was played Saturday night at the Civic arena. Mr. Sub was up against Harmony Church. These two teams were rated No. 1 and No. 2 going into this tournament. The Sub boys were really pumped up for this game as they knew it was going to be on television. Both teams came out of the gate prepared prepared to play a tough game with many a good check thrown, but after the first period the score was 0 to 0. The Sub boys put their mark on the scoreboard first when Tim passed to Les who got a shot on net that the goalie couldn't handle, allowing allowing Clayton to grab the rebound and lift the puck over the goalie and into the net. The Sub boys then recorded recorded a two goal lead when David scored on a passing play from Les and Rick. The Sub boys were starting starting to show the wear of the game, but they kept digging for that little extra. With 22 seconds showing on the clock and the face off in the Sub end Harmony pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. attacker. Chad won the face off but couldn't get the puck past the Harmony point man who passed across to the other point man who let a blast go through a maze of players that Jeff had no chance on, with 11 seconds to go in the game. The final score read Harmony 3, Mr. Sub 2. The Sub boys can hold their head high as they did what no one thought they could do and that was to make it to the "A" Championship. Championship. The Sub team would like to thank their parents and all the other fans who supported supported them during this tournament. The coaches would also like to thank the players for their great effort ana determination. The Sub players at this tournament were Jeff Crawford, Chad Veinot, Les McCrory, Justin Vance, Clayton Guest, Tim Forret, David Vernon, Rick Swale, Jack Laverty, Darren Allin, Brian Thornton and Ryan Kohn. Post Season Starts Two Wins for 401 Regular season play has concluded for the teams in the Atom division of the B.R.H.L. and round robin play began for the 401 Esso team on Sunday, March 18th. Esso's first game in the post season play was against Carnation, one of the top teams in the Atom division. Both teams were short a few players but played an exciting and close game of hockey throughout all three periods. Thanks to a strong effort from all members members of the team, 401 managed managed a 3-2 victory. Congratulations are extended extended to all of the Esso players: Brandon Renton (goal); Ian Robinson, Paul Drummond, Scott MacKay (defence); Wade Worsley, Darryl Cook, Ben Medd, Scott Lambert, Ryan Bran- nigan, and John Bastas (forward). (forward). After only two minutes of play, Esso took the lead when Ben Medd dug the puck out from behind the net and Darryl Cook made no mistake in putting it past the Carnation goalie. Carnation, Carnation, while playing with a man advantage, came back at the mid point of the period period when Darryl Felstead scored to make it 1-1. Toward Toward the end of the period Paul Drummond made a nifty nifty play, shifting around three players before letting a hard snot go which beat the Carnation goalie and restored restored the Esso lead. Carnation tied the game when Darryl Felstead got his second of the game. Scott MacKay scored the final goal of the game on a nice rush from his own blueline. Tykes Record 2 Shoppers Drug Mart 'kes are gearing up for the playoffs with a win and a tie over the weekend. They started off Saturday afternoon afternoon with a big 8 to 1 victory victory over A&R Flooring who have some very talented hockey players, but the team is struggling lately. Shoppers took advantage with some very aggressive forechecking, and hustling back to cover defensively when A&R did get a break. The flood gates were opened by Sean. Pudlis who opened the scoring in the 1st period and ended the day with two goals and two assists. assists. The icing on the cake came from Chris Laton with a hat trick and one assist. Rounding out the scoring were Clint Krummeoacher and James Wilton each with one goal and one assist, and Brooke Pakosta with a sin- ;le. Assists went to Bilal ussain, Ben McCaffery, Nathan Stout and Jeff Hrdlicka. Tyler Cook replied for A&R spoiling a shutout bid by Robbie Ouimet who turned in another solid performance. performance. Sunday's game with McGregor's IDA was a battle from the word go. The game 8 featured end to end action from the start to finish and some excellent goaltending at both ends to keep the score low, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Shoppers got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted unassisted goal by Sean Pudlis late in the 1st period. Midway thru the 2nd period, period, IDA tied the score on a breakaway goal by Darryl' Steele.
