t 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 4,1990 Foul Weather Hurts Plans of Cancer Society The local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is hoping its campaign goal will be reached this year even though Mother Nature has thrown them a curve. Each April the Canadian Cancer Society hits the sidewalk sidewalk peddling daffodils to raise money for cancer research. research. / Temperature fluctuations in British Columbia in 1989 damaged the daffodil crop for this year. Rain, followed by a sudden sudden cold snap and high winds, created rot in the bulbs. The result is that many daffodils bloomed this spring but didn't flower. This reduced the numbers of daffodils available for the campaign. The Canadian Cancer Society Society decided that rather than spending extra money to purchase blooms from outside the country (which would mean less money spent on research) they would reduce the number of flowers in each bunch for sale from 10 to eight. A spokesperson from the Society said they are grateful grateful to the public for the support support it shows by purchasing daffodils each year and regrets regrets not being able to provide provide the usual amount. But that doesn't mean flowers won't be available. Mary Tillcock, daffodil day convenor, said 30,000 blooms will be available in Bowmanville, Newcastle and Orono. Pre-orders will be taken tomorrow (Thursday April 5) and street sales will be done on Friday, April 6. Door-to-door canvassing will be carried out during April. The goal for the campaign campaign this year is $60,300. If you happen to be missed but wish to support the Society please contact the local unit at P.O. Box 42, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, L1C 3K8. Rotaiy Club to Help Restore Museum Room The last untouched room of the Bowmanville Museum may be restored in the near future. The belvedere,; the room at the top of the staircase on the second floor, is slated for renovations thanks to tlrd : Bowmanville Rotaiy club. Charles Taws, curator at the museum, said the club wished to donate $5,000 to the museum but wanted the money to be used for a special special project. At the present time, the curator is looking at costs and suggestions for restoring restoring the room. He explained that the belvedere is an architectural feature of the house that could be used for storage. Because heat rises, the room was designed to attract attract warm air in the house up and out through the windows windows of the belvedere to keep the second floor of the house cool. Artifacts won't be displayed displayed in the room though because the temperature fluctuates between hot and cold. Instead, he said, there may be some reproductions of artifacts put on display. An additional roiling will have to be put in the stairway stairway and rubber mats will be installed on the steps because because the steps leading to the room are very stoop. Mr. Taws said he had spoken to Chester Jury, the grandson of the family who originally owned the house, to find out what use the family had made of the room and found that it had been used ns an attic. Shelves that were around the walls of the room will be put back, he said. Mr. Jury also told the curator curator that, as children playing playing in the house, they used to crawl out the windows of the belvedere and lie on the roof to sunbathe. The mam purpose of the room, however, was to cool the house. A decision on the renovations renovations is still being looked into Bach a Fighter Support ■ mtm mmm mm mmm' A " « ■ __ ___ mm . .
