First Pack Maple Grove Brownies who passed their skating tests are Irene McFarlane, Joanne Dilling, Lynn Linton, Judy Pass- more, Christine Biggs and Lou Anne Rogers. The curling rink of Pat Burk, Marion James, Ivy Rundle and Marilyn Rose were the winners of the Ken Nicks trophy for the 1st schedule. Erik Nielsen, M.P., was the guest speaker at the nomination meeting of the conservative party held in Port Hope on April 7th. Garnet Garnet Rickard was unanimously unanimously named to cany the P.C. banner in the next federal election. Chairman Robert Allen expressed the Board s regret that Jane Lunn was leaving for a new recreation posi- tion in Port Hope. He paid tribute to her dedication as Program/Community Rela- tions Director of the Department for the past several years and presented her with a a l? d a decorated cake while wishing her much success. The meeting was held at the Visual Arts Centre. Intended for last week Deepest sympathy is extended extended to the family of the late Wesley McMahon of Bethany Bethany who passed away on Tuesday afternoon in a Peterborough Peterborough Hospital. Special condolences to wife Jeanne (Coulter) McMahon who has given such loyal support to her hubby over several years of ill health. Sympathy to Wes's sisters and brothers and their families in his passing - Thora Gray of Lindsay, sister Ruth and brothers Ritchie and Ted and other close family members members and friends. Wes McMahon's families roots were in Saskatchewan and in 1939 the McMahon family moved to Ontario and they later started a farming operation outside the village of Lotus. Wes and Jeanne's joint interest in the past has been in music. Their "Nostalgia Night" was an annual event over several years until ill health forced them to curtail the event. Wes will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends and relatives. On Thursday morning Yelverton U.C.W. met at the home of Allan and Agnes Howe of Stouffville. The Howes were former residents residents of our community and Agnes served for several years as the President of the U.C.W. Around 20 ladies plus a handful of we henpecked henpecked hubbies enjoyed the customary fine hospitality always found at the Howe domicile. The business session was devoted fo the customary monthly reports of activities plus Devotional etc. This took place following a delicious delicious lunch provided by Agnes with an assist by Cor- rie Malcolm. Following the meeting the group retired to a downtown restaurant for lunch-which nobody really needed. All those present were deeply impressed with the Howes lovely home and enjoyed enjoyed seeing Allan's main hobby - his miniature railroad railroad in action. Jack Bergeron, of Beaver Lumber, will be on hand to conduct conduct the seminar which takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. On Wednesday, April 25, Bernie Martin will present a one-man performance entitled "The Dark Passage". Mr.. Martin, a very talented local performer, is a writer, writer, actor, musician and environmental activist. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. SPEAKING CONTEST WINNER - Lisa Rundle won first place in the girls' division of the District A-3 public speaking competition held by local Lions Clubs recently. She now goes on to the Multiple District Contest which includes competitors from Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador. That competition is taking place in Goderich. Jonathon Goad, the other winner of the local Lions Club competition, placed second at the District A-3 level. CULLEN GARDENS OPENS - Yet another sign of spring has arrived. It's the opening of the Cullen Gardens Gardens and Miniature Village on Taunton Rd. in Whitby. Whitby. The gardens open this Thursday, April 12, and Easter Weekend Festivities take place April 13, 14 and 15. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can visit with the Easter Bunny. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this popular tourist attraction. Watch for other special events as the season unfolds. JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW - The deadline for the Visual Arts Centre's Seventh Annual Juried Show of Photography is Tuesday, May 22, at 4 p.m. Leading up to the entry deadline will be a weekend workshop on taking and developing pictures and a seminar on entering juried competitions. The seminar is May 10 at 7 p.m. and the workshop is May 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The photography show is slated for June 3 to June 24 and the juror this year is well- known Canadian photographer, John de Visser. CLOCA EASTER EGG HUNT AND CRAFT SHOW -- The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority Authority is holding a special craft show and Easter egg hunt on Sunday, April 15. This event takes place at the Heber Down Conservation Area, north of Whitby, between the hours of noon and five p.m. SECOND CITY RAISES FUNDS FOR CF - Second City Touring Company will be at Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa for a performance on Saturday, May 26, commencing at eight p.m, Proceeds from this performance performance will be directed to research into a cure or control control of cystic fibrosis. In its 90-minute program, the Second City Touring Company will present a production production entitled "The Best of Second City".
