Geography Student's Essay Wins $1,000 Jonathon Goad, an OAC geography student at Bowmanville High School, won $1000 for his essay, Temagami Forest Dispute: Economy vs Environment. The Canada-wide contest is sponsored by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, who judged the essay on originality, academic quality, relevance to geography and level of presentation. The book is called Fields of My Imagination. It :ontains poems written by children from different schools in our board. We all got a copy of the book and we were entertained by Chris Evans. On Tuesday, June 12, all the Bowmanville Elementary Elementary schools faced each other in the long awaited track and field meet. It started off in the morning as a mere competition but the excitement excitement and rivalry mounted during the day. The events included the 50,100,200,400 and 800m races, the relay, high jump, long jump, triple jump and ball throw. But, when it was all over there could be only one winner. winner. When'all events were over the announcer came on and said the point placement placement for each school. It came down to the last two places. "Second place with 238 points is Waverley" - a cheer went up from the crowd. "First place for the tenth year in a row is Vincent Vincent Massey". All the teachers teachers and students from our school went wild. The final standing showed that we had won by only 4 points! The medal winners from our school were Derek Topham (junior boys champ) Emily Muir (tyke girls champ) and Brett Forsey (bantam boys champ). by Jeremy Oliver It was-Wednesday, June 13 and the girls' baseball team from Vincent Massey was on their way to Lord Elgin Elgin for their final baseball game against Waverley. All the girls were nervous. The game started at 4:00 with each team see-sawing for the lead. We were behind going going into our last time at bat. We needed three runs to win and we got them! The final score was 10 to 9. What an amazing game! All the girls on every team were good players and good sports. We would like to extend a special thanks to our coaches, Mrs. Read and Mrs. Whately, for doing a great job. Retiring Teachers Honored at Dinner The Northumberland and Newcastle Women Teacher's Association held their annual annual meeting and dinner at Victoria Hall on Wednesday, June 6,1990. Three retiring teachers were honoured at the meet- ing-Berenice Branscomb from C.R. Gummow School, Cobourg, Linda Beachamp, Grafton Public School and Gloria Gray, Newcastle Public Public School, (in absentia). A distinguished Service Certificate Certificate was presented to Carole Carole Benor who has retired after 35 years of teaching. A presentation was also made to Dr. Gary Tushing- ham, Director of Education for Northumberland- Newcastle, who has accent ed the position of Chief Executive Executive Officer in Calgary, Alberta with the Board of Education there. Linda Perkins accepted cheques for Women in Crisis from Northumberland- Newcastle Women Teachers' Association and the Federation Federation of Women Teachers of Ontario. Guest speaker was Superintendent Superintendent of Program for Peel Board of Education, Lynda Palazzi. Ms. Palazzi is responsible for advertising advertising the largest public board in Canada with over 92,000 students, and administering all curricula and curriculum policies as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and the Board. .
