SOLID INVESTMENT CALL PAT IRWIN LYCETT by Loma Miller The Bowmanville Lions Club's July 9th meeting was highlighted by a talk from John Veldhuis, an ardent environmentalist who is concerned concerned about the way we have been disposing (or not disposing) of our refuse. The problem has become especially especially acute in this last century century of great industrial and nuclear growth. John Veldhuis is the founder and president of the Garbage of Ontario Diminished Diminished (G.O.O.D.) organization organization among other groups dedicated to the saving of the planet before it is one grand garbage dump. He spoke with passion and feeling about the immediate immediate necessity for 'doing something' about the amount of garbage we are creating and the horrendous problems that have arisen regarding its disposal. He stressed that practical ways must be found to dispose of our garbage before we completely completely destroy the very earth we live on. "This is our earth, our water, our air," Mr. Veldhuis Veldhuis points out. "It is what supports our lives and we are polluting it." He underscored the many ' and disastrous mistakes that are being made around the world as countries come to grips with the fact that their garbage might be the only everlasting legacy our progeny will inherit. Also noted, was the fact that compulsory recycling and fines for more than the allowéd number of refuse containers littering up the curbs has been found effective effective in many cities. He cited London and Paris as two examples examples "I followed a garbage truck in Paris and saw no more than two plastic bags at each stop. But in London, there was garbage piled up to the house windows waiting waiting for disposal," Mr. Veldhuis Veldhuis observed. He also noted that in some poorer countries there is less garbage because people people are forced live off the refuse refuse piles, leaving only a small amount of unusable trash to be dealt with. In the more prosperous countries, garbage has become become a challenge due to excess excess packaging of products and the amount of unnecessary unnecessary waste that is accepted in consumer-oriented societies. societies. "We are countries where built-in obsolescence is the norm. We were supposed to eel van REALTY LTD. Prospective Purchasers look to Edvan Realty because of bur proven record of success. We are the epitome epitome of the disposable society," society," he lamented. He stressed that a new generation of consumers must be educated to make responsible decisions regarding regarding not only their own waste, but also hazardous wastes created by industry. "Children must be educated educated to look for new ways to dispose of garbage. Recycling Recycling of ' paper and other mg rodu products must become a way of life with them if they are to save the environment," Mr. Veldhuis stressed. To this end, the environmental environmental groups in this and other areas are undertaking a program of environmental awareness in schools, Malls, and all venues of the media to make future citizens aware of the garbage problem problem that will loom large in their futures. Mr. Veldhuis showed slides of the Waste Exchange Exchange held last year at the Bowmanvillé Mall. Everything Everything from half-used paint to.old tires were swapped or sold - thus reducing the amount of garbage that mushroomed : on the local Praise for School Band I am writing this note to inform the lovers of band music in this area that they missed the treat of a lifetime last Friday evening. A small group of people were fortunate fortunate enough to attend a concert concert in O'Neill Collegiate, Oshawa, given by a 71-piece Concert Band from Bromley, London, England, on a tour of Canada. These young people, people, between the ages of 15 - 18 have graduated to the band from the teaching programs programs in the schools in Bromley and will proceed to music programs in colleges and universities in Britain. They have won many honours honours and awards and last year became world champions champions at the World Music Concourse. Concourse. They make many appearances appearances each year in Britain and Europe and have toured the U.S. as well. I have heard many fine bands in my lifetime, both professional and amateur, but I have never heard a more moving performance than the one given by this band and I feel very sorry that so many music lovers missed it, either because they were not aware of it, or did not make the effort to attend. attend. It would certainly have been an education for the local H.S. Band members. members. Yours truly, Dorothy Payne P.S. I would like to thank the staff of the Music Dept, of O'Neill Collegiate who worked so hard to make this event possible and wish them all good luck in their future endeavours. Preparing for Fair in Orono Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society has been hard at work for the lost 10 months preparing for the 138th edition of the Durham Central Fair. "Events such as this should become a yearly event," Mr. Veldhuis says. Also discussed was the amount of time that even biodegradable products take to break down through the action of sun and air. The idea is good, but has problems. These products, such as biodegradable garbage garbage bags and diapers, must have the benefit of direct sunlight and air to break down and when they are covered by dirt and other garbage, they will smolder for up to 500 years. Leaves ana lawn cuttings would be more beneficial if composted rather than bagged as would a great percentage percentage of vegetable and other biodegrddable matter which is now being put out, enveloped in green plastic garbage bags and preserved for posterity. "Sort your garbage," instructed instructed Mr. Veldhuis. "Then take it to a transfer station where it can be sent to the many recycling facto ries which are blooming due to the necessity of recycling." recycling." The guest speaker said that we are all responsible for the earth and so far we have been very unkind to it. That's a very dangerous thing to do to the very thing which supports our lives. There is much work to be done by Mr. Veldhuis and the groups he has created to save the environment. As he pointed out: "There has to be a changing attitude" from the politicians down. Only then will G.O.O.D.'s slogan of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Recycle make any lasting impression impression on the problem. Veldhuis handed out leaflets leaflets published by the Port Granby-Newcastle Environment Environment Committee which lists several things that the ordinary ordinary citizen can-do to lessen the amount of refuse sent to landfill sites.
