What began as the inspiration inspiration of university student Dan Meraw'has evolved into the Bowmanville Youth Drama Drama Club. The club was formed last year when about 20 students students gathered to produce "A Man for All Seasons." Many of the original members of the club had their stage debuts while involved involved with the drama productions productions at Bowmanville High School. Neil Wind a member of the club describes it as "something for students to do. It is a lot of hard work but also really fun." The club is a legal charity organization. Members hope that by next year they will be out of debt and able to start donating to a worthy cause. The group plans to use money raised through the drama club to sponsor two children from third world countries. The plays are directed, cast, and organized with as little help as possible from adults. As Neil says, "what we are trying to do is as much as we can on our own without without bringing too many adults into the scene." There is no age limit for the club. The only requirement requirement is that you are a student student and love the theatre. This summer the students students took on the ambitious task of producing "The Visit" by Friedrich Duerrenmatt. Signs were posted at Bowmanville High School to obtain cast members and auditions auditions were held in May. The play involved a larger larger cast than the previous summer which created more challenges for the students. "Last year we only had 15 to 20 people in the cast. This year there was 45 - 50 people people involved in "The Visit." This summer the club held various fundraising events and for the first time acquired sponsors for their programs from various downtown businesses. James Publishing Co. Ltd. "I was really impressed. It seemed that all of a sudden sudden it all came together." He says the goal of the club is "to come out of debt and for everyone who likes theater to have fun." Several members of the Bowmanville Youth Drama Club are also considering producing a dinner theatre later on this fall.
