"We had a couple of guys hurt tonight, so I was able to get some ice time." "I have to prove myself, but there hasn't been the chance yet." Prior to landing with the <ey l tha league. Bob Davis, who is the Port Hope area scout for the Eagles, contacted Eriksson ana told him of the Eagles' desire to have him suit up for them. The Eagles were in need of a shake-up after going 9- 0-1 to start the season, and falling back to a 6-10-2 record in their past 18 outings. outings. They have fallen from first place to third behind league-leading Uxbridge and Lakefield. With only five games to his credit, Eriksson has recognized recognized the difference in the calibre of play from the high school ranks. "This is a lot faster and there are better quality players. But they weren't good enough to beat Cobourg's senior team. With five juniors called up to play on a senior team decimated by injuries, the Raiders were handed a 59- 42 loss in a Kawartha 'A' game played last Thursday. The loss dropped the Raiders' record on the season season to 4-4. With their two best players (Treffor Davies with a bad knee and Dustin Reid with a foot injury) unable to play, senior coach George Matsusaki was forced to summon up five juniors for the game. "Both of them (Davies (Davies and Reid) will be out for the next three weeks, so we'll try and hang in there until the beginning of February February when we get them back." "When we do get everybody everybody back, we have a very good chance of winning Kawartha, and that's what we're gearing for." Thursdays game was a classic example of what happens happens when a team is forced to go with inexperienced players. Cobourg were able to score most of their points in the first half on easy lay ups. The Raiders were having having trouble making the quick transition from offence to defence that is needed at the.senior level. Cobourg built a 23-10 lead' at the half, and in creased it to 47-28 by the end of the third quarter. Todd Jones was the offensive offensive leader for Clarke with 11 points, while Trevor Lomax Lomax chinned in with nine. The lack of senior teams -- only five of the eight schools in the Kawartha league have teams -- coupled coupled with the injury bug has hurt the team this season. "Dustin is probably the best player in the area. Fd stack him up against anybody anybody in tne Kawartha league" praised Matsusaki.I "It's also hard for the team to keep sharp with all the breaks we have in the schedule. Our lineup hasn't been consistent. There's been a different one out there for every game." The Raiders will be off until February 5 when they host Cobourg West.
