Richards Three Bowmanville High School Grade 12 students are looking forward to hobnobbing hobnobbing with their Soviet peers this month. Tori Smales is interested in the lectures and talking with the different people who will be attending the conference. Tim Switzer said he is not extremely excited, but is looking forward to the lectures and to seeing the university campus he hopes to attend in the future. The former Canadian ambassador ambassador to the United Na tions, Stephen Lewis, will be the opening speech. ther speakers during the four-day conference will include include two senior cabinet ministers, Secretary of State Gerry Weiner and Communications Communications Minister Marcel Masse. Governor-General Ray Hnatyshyn will also speak. The debate, as Miss Laing Laing calls the dialogue to take place on the final day of the conference, is to be televised to audiences in both Canada and the Soviet Union via satellite. Miss Laing thinks, though, that the students will be only the cream of the crop. Bowmanville High School law and politics teacher, Ursula Ursula Tuerk, is one of the teachers who encouraged the students to apply to go to the conference. She said she feels encouraged in working with the new politic cal science courses because of the fact that the students were selected to go. ; "It's so lovely to see the kids grasp the topics and in^ formation so quickly," she said. "I hope we are creating aware students and it is nice to see them engaging in peaceful dialogue. Holstein Canada Offers Two $1,000 Scholarships in '91 New officers were elected at last week's Newcastle Horticultural Society meeting. Ministry Lays Charges After Juice Stinks The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has charged Ontario Tree Fruits Limited of Milton with discharging discharging a material, namely fruit juice, and causing a disturbing odor. The charges allege that between July 24 and 31, 1989 the company put fruit unfit for sale into waste bins, which were positioned to empty into a catch basin. This catch basin discharged off land adjacent to residential residential property, on which the fruit fermented. Its juice caused an odor. The company was charged with two counts under under sections 16 (1) and 16 (2) of the Ontario Water Resources Resources Act, which relate to permitting the discharge of a material which could impair impair water quality, and failing failing to notify the ministry. The company has also been charged with two counts under sections 13 (1) and 14 (1) of the Environmental Environmental Protection Act, which relate to discharging a contaminant into the environment environment that causes or is likely to cause an adverse effect, effect, and failing to notify the ministry. A court date has been set for March 21, 1991 at 9:00 a.m. at Milton Provincial Offences Offences Court. Holstein Canada, for the fourth year, will be offering two $1,000 scholarships. This money is intended to help university and college students pay tuition costs of post-secondary education studies. We would encourage all students who meet the eligibility eligibility requirements listed below to take advantage of this program. Please note that it is NOT a requirement that applicants be enrolled in an agriculture related program NOR that they plan a career in the dairy industry. Awarding of Scholarships Equal consideration (50%) will be given to: 1) 4-H projects/farm background; background; 2) scholastic records/ goals. The scholarship winners will be notified by 1991 July 30. Official announcement of the awards will appear in the Association "blue pages" in the Canadian Holstein magazine.
