At the purple door you plant grass seeds and watch them grow over the next few days. Janet's favourite activity is the brown door. There you make buildings for the Hap- pyville Community. So far they have made farms, Police Police stations, shopping malls, restaurants, church- . es, City Hall and a flower shop.Melissa's favourite center center is the orange door. The Magician's name was Peter Loughran and he performed performed many tricks for us. He pretended to chop Jon Chupa's head off. It looked like the blade went through but, Jon was able to walk away, head and all. He put two doves in a box and made them turn into blue scarves. He even put some oil into a pan and lit it and pulled a dove out of thefire. Everyone thought he was really magnificent and would like to see him again. told to Mrs. Strong by Ashley Wilson grade one. Mr. Stapleton's class of grade 6 students has been working on a unit involving electrical experiments with Mr. Ralfe's room. There is a total of 12 experiments. Half of the experiments deal with static electricity while the other half requires circuits to be made. The students in both classes also have a home project which is due on April 23. Our class would like to congratulate the grade 5/6 choir directed by Mrs. Gaha- gan on their second place standing at the recent Kiwarns Kiwarns Music Festival. They worked very hard for their success. •By Brett Forsey and Mike Penney. Es, If you travel our roads and highways in the early morning or around mid-afternoon, you'll be familiar familiar with the sight of our big, yellow schoolbuses at work. Transporting students to and from school each weekday in every kind of weather and traffic condition is a job that demands the highest levels levels of concentration and professional driving skills. At Charterways, we believe our drivers are the best in the business - that's why we set aside one week each year to give them the recognition they deserve. This year, Monday, April 22 to Friday, April 26 is Charterways Canadian Divi- son's Third Annual DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK. If you see our drivers at work, feel free to smile or wave... or whatever. We hope you'll understand if they don't wave back... We received many calls following following Dianne Francis's article in the Financial Post and the Torontp Sun, that being on welfare was equivalent to earning $45,000 a year. "I refuted that false assessment assessment in Cord's View last week. An article written in the same vein as mine, was published in Thursday's Toronto Toronto Star. The author of the article, Nate Laurie, deputy editor of the Star's editorial page, said: "While interpretations will vary from columnist to columnist with their biases and prejudices, the reader has a right to assume that the underlying facts are true. Because if a columnist is free to make up his or her own facts, the column can become an interpretation of a lie. Indeed, when facts are manufactured to support prejudice, propaganda is the probable result.", I found it remarkably refreshing refreshing that Mr. Laurie broke ranks with journalistic journalistic etiquette, and challenged Dianne Francis, who calls herself an "unabashed rightwinger," rightwinger," not about her point of view, but rather on the facts she used in an attempt to persuade others. **** On Tuesday, the Ministry released information about a regulation under the Police Services Act, that deleted the formal requirement to swear allegiance to the Monarch. Monarch. With this communique, communique, the telephone lines to my office in Bowmanville became became jammed with irate constituents, constituents, protesting that somehow it was an offence to the Queen. Personally, I can't for the life of me, understand understand such resentment at swearing solemnly that one would be loyal to Canada and uphold the Constitution of Canada. In my opinion, Canada is to all intents and purposes a separate and distinct distinct political unit with the Queen as the symbolic head of state. As Premier. Bob said in the. Legislature, "When one takes an oath to Canada, one is taking an oath to the Queen." How some people come to view that as offensive is beyond my comprehension. Doesn't the Constitution of Canada recognize Her Majesty the Queen as being the Head of State? **** On Wednesday evening, following a hectic dash from the Legislature to Cobourg, I met with the board members members and administration of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. Education. Needless to say, funding funding was one of the main topics topics on the agenda. On Thursday morning, I was in the Legislature, taking taking part in debate on private members bills. This is the only time during the life of a parliament that members nave the opportunity to introduce introduce legislation of their own design. I have really come to enjoy these Thursday Thursday mornings. On Friday, I was missing from my usual constituency day in the Bowmanville office. office.
