J cidito. Tyrone is alive and well! We miss having a regular correspondent for your paper, and our good news does not always get out. Spirit Day on June 8th went well. There seems to be a large number of young children and toddlers in this area. They all had fun - races, races, animals, clowns, painted faces, ice cream. What more can a kid ask for? • ; The main purpose of this letter is to give further information information on our Music and Stories Night which was advertised advertised in last week's papers. papers. It is to be held at the church on Friday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. Story telling is an art form that many of us are not really familiar with, somewhat somewhat of a lost art. Fortunately, Fortunately, there are people in Canada who are working to keep this art alive and bring it; back to the people. Helen Carmichael - Porter, Porter, our special guest, is a story teller par excellence. She has presented shows all across Canada, and in April organized a story telling festival festival in Toronto. Our own minister, Bonnie Kelly, is known in this area for her delightful stories of Newfoundland. Newfoundland. Music will be provided by Ashton McMaster McMaster of Oshawa, one of the best organists anywhere. All in all, it promises to be a fun evening. ■ P.S. Some tickets will be available at the door. Jacqueline Vaneyk, R. R. 5, Bowmanville. Dear Editor: Thank you for using good common sense when deciding deciding to print last week's letter letter from a concerned mother, mother, re: the kids hanging around on the street corners. corners. This happens in Bowmanville Bowmanville too. I understand exactly what the writer was trying to say. So many of my son's friends 'flop' at our house because it was easier for their parents to kick them out than to understand understand what was making them tick. People today seem to have lost the will to understand one another, and if the kid isn't a carbon copy of the 'old man' (whether (whether that's good or bad, I can't say), then the teenager isn't tolerated. Every one of us marches to a different drum beat. Our educators even ignore ignore this fact. Yes, our kids do need a place to go, even the ones who are still fortunate enough to have loving, caring caring parents who go to any length to understand their kids. They need a break, from Mom and Dad, just es parents need a break every now and then. My name and phone number has been published published in many area papers with just the same beef as you have. I have asked people people to get in touch with me 'to form a citizens committee to deal with the matter, but to date, there have been no takers. I should add that I had one sponsor come forward forward and offer a pool table if we could find a place to open a drop in centre. But one centre is not enough. If we put it in Newcastle village, then the kids in Bowmanville Bowmanville are left out. The same thing if we put the centre in Bowmanville. And no one has even mentioned Orono yet -- there's teenagers there too. Each of our communities communities needs a youth centre. And I agree with the idea that kids should run the place. My idea was to get it started - teach the kids how to keep the snack bar filled (ordering - how and when), how to keep a simple set of books, how to schedule other kids for snack bar duty, custodial custodial work, etc., and especially especially how to be their own board of directors. I was even willing to sit as an advisor advisor with them - in fact I still am eager to do this. You see, I am somewhat of a philosopher. philosopher. I believe that a teenager, or child of any age, for that matter, is only as good as they are allowed, or encouraged to be. . I suppose I see every teenager as having unlimited unlimited potential - because I remember remember all the dreams that I had at that age. The fifties was a great decade. We were lucky to have been teenagers teenagers then. But, there were no such things as student loans in those days, for post secondary secondary education. And wait- ressing at the local restaurant restaurant in the summer paid only 75 cents an hour. I wasn't able to fulfill my dreams, but perhaps I can have a hand in helping kids today to find their own niche. What better way than to be a part of their own life - a part of a youth centre for kids, by kiefs, and nothing but kids. . It's a sure thing that our 'town isn't going to do anything anything for us. They only cater to hockey teams (sorry, town, if the truth hurts). No, ,we must do this thing ourselves, ourselves, I want all of you reading this letter to phone me, or drop mo a letter c/o the Statesman office. We have to do something now, or shut up and drop the subject. subject. I for one don t plan on dropping the subject. , Sher Lectoozo, 623-9147. .atesman, Bowmanville, June 19, 1991 y's Mail ■I"'"" it ffV: effect from FrU ) une 1 19 Don't Hiss These Terrific Money-Saving. 4' x 8' x 1/2" Regular Drywall. *3=3» Treated Lumber 2" x 10" x 8'... $ 7.29 2" x 10" x 10' ......9.12 2"x 10" X 12'... 10.94 2" x 10" x 16'... 14.59 2" x 8" x 8' 4.96 2" x 8" x 10' 7.66 2"x8"x 12' 9.20 2" x 8" x 16' 9.91 4" x 4" x 8' 5.43 4" x 4" x I O' 6.69 4" x 4" x 12' 2" x 4" x 8'. 2" x 4" x I O' 2" x 4" x 12' 2"x4"x 16' 2" x 6" x 8 2"x6"x 10' 2" x 6" x. 12' 2"x6"x 16' I " x 8" P.T.
