There are no suspects. by Andrew Caddell In the midst of the events that so scarred our nation last year, I had a fascinating discussion with people I ■ have known for a long time, who were struggling with the idea that they were long "accepted" as Canadians. They are my friends and neighbours who live in the small historic village of Ka- mouraska, 150 kilometres (100 miles) east of Quebec City, on the Saint Lawrence River. Over more than a hundred hundred summers - and parts of spring and autumn, my family family has lived in the same house in Kamouraska. But it has not always been idyllic: idyllic: ten years ago, we were struck with a terrible tragedy: tragedy: our beautiful "maison canadienne" was gutted by fire. The people of the village village helped us clean out the house, and undertook a collection collection to get us back on our feet. Everyone - the mayor, the 'local priest, the neighbours neighbours from every part of the village - told us that they wanted us to return and rebuild. rebuild. They expressed a feeling feeling that few Canadians of different backgrounds seem to express to one another any more. It was love. In the spring last year the homecoming seemed a little difficult, as my parents worried about the reaction of the people in our village to the propaganda that preceded preceded the failure of the Meech Lake Accord, and our friends wondered whether we would still return in the years to come. Ironically, it was on Canada Day that we all managed to clear the air. At a family gathering of our. neighbours we began talking hockey and ended up discussing discussing the future of the country. We talked about language language laws, about Quebec's prospects as an independent country, about what other Canadians think about Quebec. Quebec. No holds barred. And all in the language of their ancestors who had come to that place 300 years ago. As the night went on we talked a great deal about ourselves - how our families had known each other for so many generations, how I would never have learned to speak French if it hadn't been for my friends in Kamouraska. Kamouraska. How I had ex pressed my love for Quebec when I lived in the Rockies, in Calgaiy, in St. John's, in Ottawa and Toronto, and when I visited anywhere outside my home province. And I talked of. all the good people I had met in those places too, and what Em astonishingly beautiful, rich, gentle and generous country Canada was, and is. About the respect Canada has developed in the international international community. And as the sun went down, I realized realized that for us in that living room that night, we believed in Canada because it worked between us, and always had. ' These people wanted to hear good things about their country - Canada - before they threw that all away to embark on the creation of a nation-state called Quebec. As the year went on, I recounted recounted that, conversation to many people from across the country, and they were surprised surprised at the feelings of attachment attachment expressed by that family of Quebecers, spoken in the same words they might themselves use. These people, from every corner of Canada, felt a frustration with the state of the nation, but they agreed that there is a strong will to keep it together. together. This shared concern does not surprise me; while the news media focuses on conflict between us, there is a great deal that all Canadians Canadians have in common. Perhaps Perhaps we don't know one another another enough, and we don't appreciate the rich histoiy that we share; I believe that there is far more that unites us than divides us. But neither I nor anyone else who believes in Canada has a way of expressing support support for a united country, because because we have not yet been brought together as a force to defeat the feelings of helplessness helplessness and negativism that seem to have us in their grip. I think it is time for all of us so-called "ordinary Canadians" Canadians" to stand up and be counted to express a credo for Canada-to shock the politicians politicians and the nay-sayers into realizing that there are millions of us who want to see the country remain united. united. I say this because I, too, am am "ordinary Canadian" - a town councillor in a small municipality on the border of Montreal. But I be- GROSS CANADA MARKETPLACE ITS FAST - ITS EASY! That's why I want to know if you would be willing to get your.family, friends and neighbours involved involved in a national petition campaign to keep the country country together. If we don't do it, no one else will. I propose that the following following petition be sent to every elected legislature, and parliament parliament bv July 1.1992: I am a Canadian. Proud to be a citizen of a country whose strengths of diversity tolerance, justice and linguistic duality duality have been examples to the rest of the world. For as Canadians we have worked for more than a century to prove that it is possible to build a country where people of all racial, linguistic, religious religious and cultural groups can live, love and progress together. In this time of stress on our national national fabric, all the regions regions of our country, and people of all backgrounds backgrounds must be made to feel that Canada is their home. I believe deeply that we must all work together together to keep Canada united for generations to come, and I commit myself to contributing to ■ an even greater understanding between Canadians from sea to sea to sea. I am only one person, but I am convinced that by working together we could provide a great sense of unity unity to Canada. But first I need your help. Please write me, Andrew Caddell, 35 Campbell Ave., Montreal, Quebec H4X1V2, if you are interested. This article is being being sent to every major newspaper in Canada - in both languages - to seek the support of all Canadians to keep our country together. A different program for kids will be going on each week this summer. , Confusion Over Ozone Layer Ozone. Twenty years ago most people hadn't heard the word. Even now it has confusing connotations. Is it f ood or bad? We hear that oles in and thinning of the ozone layer are bad, but then a news show reports that we have an overabundance overabundance of ozone in our cities. Which story is true, and what does ozone, mean to our health? " Both ozone scenarios are true, and both have serious consequences for our health. Ozone is a naturally- occuring atmospheric gas, which at upper levels of the atmosphere acts as a screen for ultraviolet radiation from the sun. In the last half century, the use of certain certain chemicals, called chlorofluorocarbon chlorofluorocarbon s, or CFCs, has begun to thin the ozone layer. CFCs are useful industrial industrial chemicals because they are extremely stable. Unfortunately, they are so stable that when released they can make their way to the upper levels of the atmosphere, atmosphere, and remain there .without breaking down for 70 to 80 years. CFG molecules molecules react with ozone in such a way that the ozone molecules are destroyed. One CFG molecule can destroy destroy 100,000 molecules of ozone. With less ozone layer to protect us from ultraviolet radiation, we are more susceptible susceptible to skin cancer, including including the often deadly melanoma. Scientists estimate estimate that for every one per- . cent decrease in stratospheric stratospheric ozone, there is a four to percent increase in the eral pollutants produced by cars, and is the one most directly directly harmful to humans as the primary component of smog. When breathed deeply into the lungs, ozone causes a burning sensation. Long periods of ozone concentration concentration in the lungs can cause permanent damage. Breathing Breathing ozone is particularly harmful for children and asthmatics. And ozone levels are highest on bright, sunny summer days. How do we protect our health from this ozone double-whammy? double-whammy? On a personal level, two rules are important. important. First, always wear a sunscreen when outside to protect your skin from UV radiation. Choose a sun- incidence of non-melanomic screen with a high sun proskin proskin cancer. Ultraviolet radi- tection factor, " " ation also can harm our eyes " " and immune systems, and can lower the yield of crops. Ozone is also one of sev- six preferably lien protects over 25, and which protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Second, avoid ex ercise or strenuous exertion on city streets during prime pollution hours ana on smoggy summer days. In a broader sense, there is much more we can do to affect our "ozone future." We can avoid products which use CFCs: furniture and insulation insulation foams, styrofoam products and packaging, car air conditioners, halon fire extinguishers, and CFC- based aerosols (no longer produced in Canada, but still improted). Be careful" to have CFCs from your refrigerator refrigerator or car air conditioner recycled. Shop around until you find professionals who provide this service. Drive your car only when necessary; necessary; use transit and carpool whenever possible. And most important, educate yourself about the issues, and let your elected representatives representatives hear your views. James Publishing Co. Ltd.
