Junior agriculturalist program update by Lisa Daniels, Program Regional Supervisor. Several weeks ago, promotion promotion of the 20th year of the Junior Agriculturalist Program, a summer experience experience program which enables urban young people to live and work for an 8 week period period on a farm, began. The program is now in motion. On the 24th of June, a group of enthusiastic young people said good-bye to their families and set off for destinations destinations unknown in search of a summer experience unlike unlike any other. These young people ranging in age from 15-24, found the key to their quest, when they each discovered discovered their destination to be a farm. Nancy VanderByl from Alexandria found her destination to be a dairy operation operation in Ameliasburg in Prince Edward County. Crystal Matusiak from Allis- ton is living at an apple orchard orchard at Bowmanville, while Michelle Zorn from Toronto is living at an apple orchard near Port Perry. Dan Dale from Peterborough is living a a fruit and vegetable operation operation near Beaverton. Gerald Gerald Hopps from Peterborough Peterborough is living on a horse farm near Norwood, and Jennifer Rowell from Peterborough Peterborough is living on a dairy farm near Cannington. All of these young people will be learning hands on what farming is all about, and will gain an appreciation appreciation for rural farm life. At the same time, the rural/ urban gap will be narrowed. The Junior Agricultural ist Program provides new learning experiences and challenges for both the Junior Junior Agriculturalist and the Host Farm families. Field Crop Club Holds July Meeting by Dianne Bowman Tne 4th Field Crops Club meeting was held on July 4th at Evergreen Farm and Garden in Orono. We opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge then Mr. Morawetz explained how various kinds of seed preparation and planting. Mr. Morawetz showed us two videos, one was on seed drills and how they work and the other was on "farm safety". Mr. Bowman brought a few samples of oats for us to judge. After judging the samples it appears we will all have to practise more. The meeting was adjourned adjourned at 10:00 p.m. Mr. Bowman and Mr. Morawetz treated us with homemade cookies and pop.
