^ Stampede of Values, Supplement of The Canadian Statesman/Newcastle Independent, Wednesday, July 17,1991 3 Dear Queen Elizabeth, my grandma needs your help "'L „TT7 vmB PUlHJ 1 ESSHfe m PM/'I 1 wié i/WM Pink «4©/ I '3AV£OW -H i 72/VHV7VXZ VVVHV$ Z I9Q9 'T I'i ™ > 7-"'"- *.? ; ©c r 'TsatfS K79IÔ002 An English boy, Kevin Oldland, and his friends decided to give Queen Elizabeth a treat. It must be boring for her at the palace, they thought, just drinking tea and chatting with people. So they sent her an invitation: invitation: "Dear Elizabeth, we would like you and sonic of your friends to sec us play soccer. It will be played out- • side my house in Surrey." It was signed by Kevin, his younger brother Neil, 4, and a friend Brian, 5. Unfortunately, the Queen couldn't make it. A monogrammed envelope envelope arrived at Kevin's home some days later. It was from one of the Queen's Ladies in Waiting. It read: "Dear Kevin, I am commanded commanded by the Queen to thank you so much for kindly asking Her Majesty to come and watch you and your friends play soccer and to say how sorry the Queen is not to be able to come." Children arc always writing writing to the Queen, inviting her home to tea, asking if she likes pop music, or bluntly to ask for some help with their homework. Cindy Zerbcl, a 14-year- old American high school girl, once wrote: "Dear Your Majesty, I expect, like me, you just love tlic Rolling Stones. I've got lots of their records, but not their home addresses. Can you help me, please?" A letter from Buckingham Palace arrived at Cindy's New York home soon afterwards, afterwards, saying: "Her Majesty is interested and pleased you enjoy the Rolling Slones. I must explain it is not possible possible for the Queen to tell you how to get in touch with them." Almost everyone who writes a letter to the Queen gets a reply, although^ of course, not from Her Majesty personally. Her Ladies in Waiting do that. "Her Majesty gets so many letters, it would be physically impossible to answer them all herself," says a Palace spokeswoman. "But she docs try to read as many as she can each day, especially from young people." When 10-year-old Nigel Strudwick heard that his grandparents were going to be evicted he decided there was only one possible course of action -- write to the Queen. "Dear Queen, please will you get my grandparents a new home, They arc going to be evicted. Love, Nigel." He didn't tell anyone until he received a reply from 1 Buckingham Palace. "Dear Nigel, The Queen's Private Secretary has been commanded by Her Majesty to acknowledge receipt of your letter with the assurance assurance that it will be passed on to the appropriate Ministry for their attention." Said Nigel's grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Strudwick: "Nigel's letter was sent to the Ministry and to the local council who told us we would be rehoused long before eviction date." Said a Council spokesman: "Nigel's letter certainly received top priority at the Ministry."
