Pedro Quintana, a 14- year-old from the city of Bilbao Bilbao in Spain, arrived in Canada on June 28 and left last week on August 9. It was tough at first, admitted admitted Anna. "I'm not going to lie and say it was easy. It was hard work." "When you bring someone into your home from another country and another culture you have to expect that," she added. As Anna explained, initially initially they had a number of differences to overcome. Pedro is from a city environment, environment, yet being placed in a rural setting can be something something of a culture shock. "It was an adjustment because because city kids like Pedro don't realize the dangers of living on a farm. They still think they can do anything Ithey want," explained Anna. "I had to explain to Pedro that people don't just get injured injured in farm accidents, they die." Since arriving at Bragg Farms, Pedro learned a lot about farming. City kids also don't realize realize that chores are a way of life for farm children. City children in Spain don't have to work to support support themselves or do household household chores. As Pedro explained, to youths in Spain, school is like a full-time job. Academia is very important important in Spain. If you do well, then your parents reward you, Pedro said. Anna, however, assigned Pedro simple chores to do during the time he spent on the farm. According to Pedro, he didn't mind setting and clearing the table at meal time or helping' the workmen workmen on the farm. "The workmen were nice, but crazy," said Pedro. Anna felt it was important important to treat Pedro like a member of the family instead instead of just a guest. "If you treat someone that's spending six weeks in your home as a guest, animosities animosities begin to arise," she said. "Especially among kids who start to think one is receiving receiving preferential treatment treatment over the others," she added. That meant disciplining Pedro the way she disciplines disciplines her own kids. "If the kids fought, no one got to play with the Nintendo. Nintendo. That was it. No exceptions." exceptions."
