Apparently the page program program co-ordinators thought she could do it too, because on August 1, Sara's hopes to work at Queen's Park became became a reality. But the page program does not profess to be a day in the park. "The kids work very hard," said office administrator administrator of the Legislative Page Program, Pat Farmer. "And they work very long days." Pages start work every day at 8:30 a.m. and finish at 5:30 p.m. In the morning, they perform perform duties such as delivering delivering Hansards and other documents documents to the Members of the House. After lunch, they are on duty for "Question Period" from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. During During Question Period, they Gord Mills Defends Removal Of Ontario Scholar Funding The government created some ripples of resentment a few weeks back when it was announced that it would discontinue discontinue the $100 monetary part of the Ontario Scholarship Scholarship Program award. As the MPP for this riding, I also took considerable flack from some of my constituents over the dropping of the $100. The Ontario Scholarship Program was introduced in 1959 to recognize the high standard of academic work in Ontario secondary schools and to provide an incentive to our young people to proceed proceed to some form of postsecondary postsecondary education. In 1958, the $100 went a long way, it doesn't go far today. The Ministi-y of Education Education is now revising the program program in order to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of all students. This includes those who are continuing their education in university, college, or an apprenticeship program, and those who are entering the workforce. In 1989-90, there were more than 18,600 Ontario Scholars, and at least that number are expected to qualify this year. In a time of economic restraints I believe believe that the government has a responsibility to encourage encourage achievement among all our students. To do this, I believe that we must put as much money as possible into educational programs and services. I am very proud of our Ontario Scholars. These students will continue to receive an Ontario Scholar certificate and a congratulatory letter signed by the Minister, the Honorable Marion Boyd, to personally mark their achievement. To all those who wrote to me or took the trouble to telephone telephone me, I appreciated your views. I also nope that you can agree, that we owe all of our students the best education we can provide them with, in order that they are -better able, to compete compete in the workplace of the *90s - the way I see it. Approximately 25 per cent of the work week is taken taken up by the school program whicn includes tutorials in math, french and the legislative legislative process. At 3:30, half of the pages Sara Bragg will be working as a parliamentary parliamentary page at Queen's Park in October and November. November. Sara, who is the daughter of Barry and Anna Bragg, of RR 4 Bowmanville, was among 500 applicants. Of these, 72 were selected as parliamentary parliamentary pages. stay on duty while the other half arc tutored in math and french. Two groups spend alternate alternate days serving in the house or being tutored. Legislative procedures are taught to everyone in the morning. According to Ms Farmer, the Ontario Legislative Page Program is the only one in Canada that is education- based. The pages receive an honorarium honorarium of $15 a day for their services. But money is the last thing on the minds of students who choose to participate in the program. Sara said: "I wanted to participate for the experience. experience. Plus, I'm anxious to learn more about the government government system." Ms Farmer noted the students students will get many opportunities opportunities to meet with Ministers, Ministers, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Premier. Getting into the program, however, is highly competitive. competitive. Out of about 500 applicants, applicants, only 72 are chosen from the province. Only grade seven and eight students are eligible for the position of page and out of those, there is an equal number of boys and girls chosen. Applicants are also chosen chosen on a constituency basis. Each Ontario constituency is allowed to have a page selected selected from it every other year. Fortunately for Sara, a E age was not selected from lurham East last year. Furthermore, the students students must have an academic academic average of over 80 per cent and a letter of recommendation recommendation from their principal. principal. These two particulars are essential because the students students take four weeks out of school to participate and must be able to catch up once they return. Sara also sent letters of recommendation from teachers teachers and her 4-H leader along with her application. "The odds of a student getting chosen are slim," admitted admitted Ms Farmer. "And we try very hard not to get their hopes up too high because that wouldn't be fair." "But every single one of those students who apply is very deserving."
