The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 4,1991 5 Homeowner Thanks Everyone for Helping After Maple Tree Crashes Through Roof Dear John: ' You will recall that I last spoke to you on the morning oF August 16, 1991 on my front lawn. At the time you were taking pictures of a large maple tree which fell on our home. Since return- ■ ing from holidays I see that ! the tree and house made the ; front page of your August ■ 20, 1991 issue. It was cer- ! tainly a hard way to get my | name in the paper. ' In view of the adverse ; publicity which our Town '■ and Regional Staff sometimes sometimes get, I felt that in fair- V ness to them I should write this letter. The tree fell at i.m. on i a tre- approximately 11:45 p.i ■ ; August 15. There was : mendous gusting wind which lasted about 15 minutes. minutes. Unfortunately, the old tree could not stand the gusts. The tree fell onto the roof of the house, smashing three front windows and driving a big branch down through the roof, through the ceiling and into the front hall. Within five minutes of the crash many neighbours from blocks around had assembled, assembled, having heard the noise. Two Durham Regional Regional Police Officers attended at our house within 5 minutes minutes to check that we were O.K. They also checked the attic to make sure the house was safe. They were veiy courteous and made us feel better. They both wanted to know how big the "bang" was. It then started to pour rain and with a huge hole in the roof the water started to come in. Within a few minutes minutes the fire department attended. attended. They checked the house to make sure it was safe and then climbed onto the roof, cut out the branches branches and put a tarp over the roof, minimizing any water damage. The crew all wanted wanted to know how big the "bang" was. The next morning at 8:00 a.m. a Town works crew arrived arrived to clear up the tree, as it was a Town tree. They had the whole thing gone in about 1 hour. One member of the crew thought that the tree weighed about 20 tons, the crew asked what kind of a 'bang" the tree made. In view of all the circumstances circumstances we thought everything everything worked out fine. If the tree had fallen on anyone, they would have been lulled. The help we obtained from the Town and Region employees employees was first class. In case you are also curious, curious, believe me when a 20 ton tree falls on your house in a wind storm at midnight there is one "H-of-a-bang". Yours very truly, Hamilton & Associate Irwin A. Dear Mr. James: Mr. James, being I addressed addressed the letter to you and the dignitaries of this area, but, Mr. Phil Martin took pen in hand and responded to it, perhaps you could visit our area and then you be the judge and compare what we nave received in twenty-five years of paying taxes and what the NEW SUBDIVISION SUBDIVISION has received in just three to five years. I believe you'll see my point. Mr. Martin, I would like to ask you to read my letter over again. In no way did I put down any NEW SUBDIVISION SUBDIVISION people. All I mentioned mentioned is that the buses come up our subdivision to pick up your children and if your bridge was completed (which has been in the making making since 1988 or longer) they could be picked up near home. Get tne point? Mr. Martin, we have had water, sewage, hydro and reconstructed reconstructed roads before you moved here but because of the continuous traffic and construction haulage, Sunset Sunset Blvd. is in dire need of attention, also our street lighting leaves a lot to be desired. desired. I do know since you have moved into the area we have more portables at the schools, a library which was moved at a great deal of expense expense and now they're talking talking and planning of a move and a bigger expense for our sewage plant. I, for one, will be looking forward to all i" at our stores and : the monies in this area an2 'hope you will be involved with tne many activities we have in our Community.
