Congratulations to all the hard-working executives of Durham Central Exhibition! We have just witnessed another another record-breaking four-day fair. Attendance Friday, Saturday Saturday and Sunday broke previous records, and of course most depts exceeded other year's. The many new ideas, competitions competitions etc. drew nothing but complimentary comments! The Great Pine Ridge Kinetics Kinetics are sponsoring a worthwhile worthwhile event. Once again the Durham Central Fair has passed into the books, and as usual the weatherman weatherman co-operated 100% to bring ideal weather for the entire entire four days, September 5- 8th. With many new innovative ideas, there really was "something "something for everyone". The official opening was held Thursday evening, September September 5, in the arena stage, with Wally Macht, news director director for C.H.E.X. Peterborough, bringing greetings as guest. The stage was certainly most attractive and of course the highlight of Thursday evening evening was crowning of "Miss Durham Central." The young ladies were most attractive and this year each contestant is to be congratulated on the depth and enthusiasm projected in their individual speeches. Thursday evening also saw spirited competition for the Durham East Jr. Farmers for the Farmers Olympics. This is a real crowd pleaser and draws lots of fun! Special talent imported from the C.N.E. were the Theatre Theatre Dance Academy, and the agility and training of these young ladies, proved very enjoyable, enjoyable, plus the musical entertainment entertainment of Warren Sutcliffe to top off Thursday evening. Fridays features included the large school parade and believe believe me, there is no scarcity of youth in the area! A wee bit of music perhaps might improve the parade, but the fun and ex citement arc always in abundance. abundance. Lots to sec and do all evening evening with visits to Cattle bams and once again to admire the beautiful Blonde D'Aquitanc cattle, plus the noisy poultry bams. In speaking with one of the poultry directors we heard the poultry exhibit is up over 100 entries from last year to a grand total of 812 entries. An interesting breakdown, follows, there arc only 7 different species species of ducks, but a surprising 105 different breeds of fowl! The general poultry exhibit at Orono Fair is considered extremely extremely large in all poultry exhibitions. exhibitions. There are so very many interesting interesting items, it is difficult to mention all, but the "Cake Auction" proved to be a real eye-opener! The Grand Champion Champion cake brought the unheard of price of $480 - (a bit too expensive expensive to cat)! Another new idea this year and quite a fun thing for the little little folks, "The Kiddie Tractor Pull" sponsored by the Great Pine Ridge Kinsmen Club. The little tractors, pedal operated with weights arc placed on the back, one young fellow could still pedal past the finish line, with over his own weight! Friday evenings old time fiddle contest proved again to be a big crowd pleaser! Youngest Youngest entrant only 8 yrs. old, and real pro on the violin. One of the older contestants came from Manitoba. Others from Brampton, Scarborough, Stratford, Stratford, Pembroke, Eganville and Toronto, etc. Barry Virtue, Port Perry, was capable M.C. for contests and special entertainment entertainment provided by Warren Sutcliffe with music, and tap dancing by 3 young folks. Judges for show were Ross Morrow, Lindsay and Cecil Junkin, Fcnclon Falls and these gentlemen certainly, had their evenings work! The high calibre calibre of talent in all age groups was certainly appreciated by the capacity audience. The under 12 yrs. contest won by Mattcw Johnson, Stratford, Stratford, John Chartrand, Duro, and Deanna Dolstra, Whitby who also at 8 yrs. of age won the attractive trophy for "youngest contestant", donated and created by Don Evans. In the 18 yrs. April Vcrch, Pembroke came first and second second John Pitalzka, Eganville. In duct class Crystal Ploh- mcn and Scott Woods, 2nd John Piklzkc and April Vcrch, 3rd Norman Andrews and James Lowery. In over 60 years class - George Simpson, Fcnclon Falls, Scotty McHcoly, Brampton, Brampton, Earl Giles, Scarborough. In Open Class - Crystal Plowham, Scott Woods, Michelle Michelle Lucbcnicki, Murray Kronas. Altogether 27 entries and an excellent program! "Baby Show" Another brand new idea this year 1991, was the baby show, sponsored by that energetic group of young woman, The Greater Pine Ridge Kinetics. Really, this is not a brand new item to Durham Central, as "Out of the Mists". (History of Clarke Twp.) written by Sid Rutherford and Helen Schmid, tells us of a baby show held away back in 1910! This writer remembers attending the Orono Orono Fair back in 38 - 39 when again a well-attended baby show was held and the judges were my uncle Dr. Hartley Manning and his wife Marjorie! Marjorie! ( a nurse), (Dr. Manning was here prior to Dr. Fraser McKenzie coming to Orono! With over 50 entries and almost almost that many turned away, this event proved to be a real crowd-plcascr, with the arena filled early Saturday morning. You might guess, all parents, grandparents and other relatives relatives in attendance at this exciting exciting event! The well qualified judges were all local nurses - Carol Hendry, Oshawa Hospital and from Orono, Louise Hughes - Bowmanville Hospital and from Pontypool, Roberta Nesbitt Nesbitt - Bowmanville Hospital and from Orono. And following following winners announced - B1 - Natalie Tennant in 3-6 months for girls, B1 - Graham Wight in 3-6 months for boys. B2 - Brcanna-Lec Heard 6- 12 months girls, B2 Michael Bullock 6-12 months boys. These two babies were judged best over all winners! B3 - Hannah Stephens 12- 18 months.
