A face to match the words. I've never said I had the facial features to be on television. It's debatable whether or not they're even acceptable enough to be included in a newspaper. newspaper. I do have a great face for radio. By the time you've reached this point in the paper, you'll notice that we have gone through a complete overhaul. For the better, we hope. The sports section is part of the overhaul. New headings, ideas, and concepts will be incorporated incorporated into the sports as each week passes by. It is our intention to give our readers a better scope of what is happening in and around the area. As you read through the sports, you will notice a couple of changes that have been made for the initial initial edition of the new-look Statesman. We have moved Flashback, which used to be included included in Sport-talk, to a column of its own. And, we've dug a little deeper into the history of sports in the town. Included in Flashback are a couple of items from 50 years ago. It's interesting. Especially the draw that was conducted during an all-star softball game. Historians will be amused at the cost of tickets and the prize involved. As leagues begin in the coming weeks, we hope to include the standings on a weekly basis. At a glance, you'll be able to locate your league, team, and how well or poorly your record is. Beginning next week, we will attempt to give all of the armchair referees out there an opportunity to make a decision on a rule interpretation from various various sports. We'll give you a situation, and it will be up to you to decide what call the referee or umpire should make. After you've made your decision, look for the answer. Chances are it won't be the same one you selected. As far as attending all of the sporting events in the town, it's virtually impossible for us. Contrary to the belief of some, as reporters, we do have social lives that need to be attended to once in a while, That's not to discourage you from calling however. however. We are always willing to lend an ear, and will make every attempt to attend your event to shoot a photo or get a story. The biggest problem we find, is people who approach approach us after the conclusion of an event, wondering wondering why we weren't out to get a photo. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, we're not psychic. We know your phones at home dial out. If you haven't called us, chances are we didn't know about it, By the same token, if you have an upcoming event, try to give us some advance notice. If you've had a tournament or special event in the making for months, plan ahead. Calling on the day of the event requesting us to drop everything and come out for a photo isn't always possible. It gets back to my point about having lives to lead outside of work, As much as we love to work, we equally love our. free time. We're no different than you. In essence, this is your paper. By working together, together, we can make it a better one. Win Playoff ; Van Dyk Realty mosquito soccer team won their playoff opener, 3-2, over Hampton. Nicky Z. scored Van Dyk's final goal after receiving receiving a pass from hardworking hardworking Adam Stoker. Excellent defence work in this game came from Karl Weiner and Denis Goggin. Brian Wojnarowski scored and set up Hampton's goals late in the game. It was a good team effort, but the next game will be a lot tougher and the team will have to work a lot harder. Oshawa driver Randy McDonald was the big loser in Quebec. He lost the race and his championship to Hanley. McDonald was the GM Motor- sport winner in 1990. McDonald gambled he could go the entire 200 laps without pitting for fuel or new tires for his Chevrolet Lumina. For a while early in the race, it looked like his strategy might pay handsome dividends. Hanley, driving the Molson Export sponsored Thunderbird, and Beaver Dragon of Milton, Vt. bumped heavily entering turn one on lap four. Hanley spun off the track into the infield infield while Dragon was able to continue. By the time Hanley was headed in the right direction again, he was two laps down to the field. "The car was working good," Hanley said. "But I got inside Beaver (Dragon) down the front stretch and then we hooked in the turn. "The clutch broke and the motor stalled. By the time I got it going, I was down a lap. Then it stalled again and I was down two. But this is an excellent excellent track for passing and I decided decided I'd just keep driving until until the wheels fell off." In the end, it was McDonald McDonald who had the wheels fall off. "We must have broken a spark plug wire just after Junior Junior passed because after that we were losing about a half- second a lap. McDonald said he wouldn't change his strategy of going all the way on one set of tires if he had to do it again.
