Tree Nursery Closure Put on Hold for Now John Chrislian, Manager, Nursery and Seed Section of Ministry of Natural Resources has temporarily withdrawn the proposal to close barcroot seedling production at three provincial nurseries. Top management management of MNR is reviewing the organizational structure of all provincial tree nurseries. They will submit a new proposal proposal to the government in the next seven to ten days. After meeting with Mr. Christian on Thursday, October October 17, the employees of the Orono Nursery were left with the impression that the bare- root seedling production at Orono will still be scheduled for closure in the second proposal. proposal. Contributing to this impression impression is the cancellation of r an anti-recession project at the nursery (the installation of a 1.2 million dollar irrigation system). The project would have injected much needed monies into the local economy and supplied some 400 person weeks of employment. The continued operation of the greenhouse facility at the Orono Nursery enables MNR management to slate that they arc not closing the whole nursery. nursery. But the reduction would shut down approximately three quarters of the nursery's present work program. This will affect approximately 95 • unclassified staff and 7 classified classified personnel. Mike Hutton and Katherine Cox of the Employees Relations Relations Committee met with Cord Mills, MPP Durham East, on Friday, October 18th. Mr. Mills had met with Bud Wildman, Minister of Natural Resources on October 17 and had expressed his and the committee's committee's concerns. Mr. Mills stated that he would do everything everything in his power to keep barcroot seedling production at Orono Nursery. The committee informed Mr. Mills that it is circulating a petition and asked him to present it to the legislature. A meeting and the presentation of the petition to Mr. Mills will take place at his office on Friday, Friday, October 25 at 2:00 jr.m., and he plans to present it to the legislature on Monday, October October 28. Letter to the Editor: Heritage Week Committee' members have started into plans for this year's celebration. celebration. Yes, we've started, but no one else has. Thirty six invitation invitation were sent out in the middle middle of September announcing a meeting on October 16. All Service Clubs and Community Associations were invited to attend. attend. Out of 36 possible participants, participants, one came out. Mr. Editor, I wonder where community spirit has gone? I realize people are very busy. I realize that we could change dates till the cows come home to suit heavy calendars - but surely, out of all the members that these groups have, one was able to attend the meeting. I would like to point out that last year the participation from community groups ran at about 3-4%. But we "put that down to the harsh economy. Why a harsh economy should stop people from having some fun, I don't know, but that's how we explained it. Is it the harsh economy this year, Mr. Editor, or just a group of communities with a pocketful of apathy? The committee has one last chance an offer to the people of the 14 communities of the Town of Newcastle. On Wednesday, October 23, a representative representative from the Ministry of Culture and Communications Communications will be at our meeting to assist us with any questions we may have regarding funding from that ministry for Heritage Week '92. This meeting had to be postponed from October 2. The invitation is there. Who will accept it? The meeting FRANK HARRIS is Candidate for DURHAM REGION COUNCILLOR WARD 3, NEWCASTLE-CLARKE TOGETHER WE MUST STRIVE NOT ONLY TO ATTRACT INDUSTRY TO THIS REGION IN ORDER THAT SUFFICIENT FUNDING IS MADE AVAILABLE FOR ALL SERVICES AND AGENCIES, WE MUST ENSURE THAT WORK IS AVAILABLE FOR THE PRESENT POPULATION AND THAT IT IS THERE FOR OUR CHILDREN. IF ELECTED I SHALL ATTEMPT TO ESTABLISH A TASK FORCE COMMITTEE WITH COUNCIL'S HELP, HOPEFULLY FUNDED BY THE PROVINCE AND FEDERAL AUTHORITIES TO ATTEMPT TO ATTRACT INDUSTRY INTO THE REGION BY AN INTERNATIONAL ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN. IN HAND WITH THIS I WILL LOBBY BOTH THE PROVINCIAL AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS TO DE-CENTRALIZE A MAJOR GOVERNMENTAL OFFICE AND HAVE IT ESTABLISHED IN THIS MUNICIPALITY. AN EXAMPLE OF THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS PROJECT IS THE RELOCATION OF THE PROVINCIAL REVENUE BUILDING FROM TORONTO INTO OSHAWA. ELECT FRANK HARRIS WARD 3, NEWCASTLE-CLARKE DURHAM REGIONAL COUNCILLOR Authorized by the C.F.O. for the Frank Harris Campaign. will be at the VAC at 7:30. I expect to see 36 shining faces. If or any reason a group finds that it cannot be represented represented at this meeting, give me a call and I'd be glad to meet with the group at another time and give them any information I can, and assist them in any way that I can. I can be reached at home most evenings after 9:00 p.m. at 623-9147, or they can leave a message with a member of my family. I would prefer not to have to go out to all 36 groups and association. That takes a lot of time, and I'm sure most people who are involved in any kind of organization will agree that sometimes there are ENOUGH meetings to attend without adding adding 36 more. Thanks are extended to the Courtice Community Association Association for attending last week's meeting. Between us, we brainstormed brainstormed some great ideas both for this year and for next. We can all do that on October 23, but we have to have participation participation in order to accomplish anything. Sher Leetooze Chairman Heritage Week Committee. Formerly a converted floating generating station, the ferry contains two transformers that contain high levels of PCBs. PCBs are considered to be a hazardous chemical and were banned in the 1970s. Under the agreement, Mr. Robinson must remove the transformers on or before Nov. 15. He must also tow the ferry out of the harbor by Dec. 31 or begin taking it apart to meet a May 31,1992 deadline. Regional--i Study Shows No Higher Infant Risk The Atomic Energy Control Board has released the results of a study into the rates of infant infant mortality and birth defects in communities near the Pickering Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Station. The research concluded that there was no evidence of an elevated elevated infant death rate in Pickering due to releases of tritium from the nuclear station. station. "The overall conclusion was that rates of infant death and birth defects were generally generally not higher in the study population population than in all of Ontario. There was no prevalent relationship relationship between these deaths or defects and tritium releases measured either at the power plant or by ground monitoring stations at some distance from the facility," the AECB researchers researchers stated. "With respect to the elevated elevated rates of Down Syndrome, the report concluded that any possible relationship with tritium tritium releases was weak and contradictory. contradictory. Further research was recommended to verify mother's residence at the time of birth of the Down Syndrome cases, and to examine other possible contributing factors such as medical x-ray exposures exposures and occupations of both parents. The study examined records of people who lived within a 25 kilometre radius of the Pickering plant. The AECB study was commissioned commissioned after a private citizen citizen claimed in 1988 to have found a possible connection between waterborne tritium releases releases from the Pickering station station and birth defects and infant infant mortality in the area.
