Frank Sponsors Pumpkin Carving Contest P : O. - A report published by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal Marshal shows that Canadian municipalities municipalities should pass stronger stronger smoke alarm bylaws in order to save lives, says Jim Hind, general manager of BRK Canada, the Canadian distributors distributors of First Alert fire safety products. "A report prepared by the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal Marshal shows that most people who died in a residential fire in 1991 did not have a smoke alarm," Hind says. "If they had had smoke alarms installed on each floor of their house, most of these people would have been able to escape safely." The Ontario Fire Marshal's study, titled "The Report on 1989 Residential Fire Fatalities in Ontario", contains the following following statistics: • 46.9% of people who died in residential fires did not have a smoke alarm. A further 26.5% had a smoke alarm that did not operate primarily due to dead or missing batteries. • 30% of the fire fatalities were asleep at the time of the fire. • 37% of those who died were more than 60 years old. "These statistics show positively positively that smoke alarms save lives," Hind says. "However, there are still many people who do not use them. That's why we are encouraging municipal ities to enact stronger smoke alarm bylaws. Such laws will tell people that smoke alarms are an essential safety device in the home." Although the National Building Code requires the installation installation of smoke alarms in new houses, apartments, and commercial residences, they arc still not generally required in existing homes. "We applaud municipalities like Etobicoke, Scarborough, Owen Sound, Saskatoon and Brampton that now require their installion on each level of every home, both new and old," Hind says. "We're sure that these municipalities will see a marked decline in their numbers of fire fatalities." The Canadian Fire Alarm Association has drafted a sample sample smoke alarm bylaw for use by communities across Canada. Canada. Titled "A By-law to Require Require the Installation of Smoke . Alarms in Residential Occupancies", Occupancies", the document can be used verbatim or custom tailored tailored for local needs. Anyone who wishes a copy of the sample bylaw can contact contact BRK Canada. The historic moment was , celebrated during a ceremony in the plant's Quality Audit area attended by about 1,500 day-shit employees, Canadian Auto Workers Union officials, and CM executives. CM of Canada's Director of Car and Truck Assembly, J.E. (John) Urbanic, termed the occasion occasion "significant in several respects, not the least of which is the fact that production of one million of the new C/K units was achieved in only 58 months. In contrast, it took almost almost 12 years - from 1965 to 1977 - to build the first million trucks. This illustrates very clearly the progress we and our employees have made in making making this plant among the most efficient of all CM plants in North America." Plant Production Manager J.R. (John) Kinghom praised the plants employees for "coping "coping with very competitive times lately and keeping the quality of our products at a consistently high level. This continued emphasis on superior superior quality means that GM's share of the full-size pickup market in Canada now stands at more than 50'percent, a tribute tribute to the skill and determination determination of Oshawa Truckers." Following extensive modernization modernization and expansion of the Oshawa truck facility as part of the CM Autoplcx investment program in the mid-and Tate- '80s, assembly of the Predesigned Predesigned C/K series of regular and extended cab pickups began began in December of 1986; the extended cab/short box model was added in January of 1989. That particular model now'ac- counts for more than 80~{)er- cent of the plant's total production. production. $2 Almost four million trucks have been produced at the Oshawa Truck Plant since it was built in 1965.
