t The Canadian Statesman, Rowmanvillc, Wednesday, October 30,1991 High Distinction Graduate Section Two Ariana Traill On June 11, 1991, Miss Ariana Traill graduated with High Distinction from Victoria College, at the Univérsity of Toronto. She was presented with the Edward Edward Wilson Gold Medal, awarded to the student with the highest standing in Classics, and the Robson Travelling Scholarship with which she spent the past summer at the American Academy in Rome. Miss Traill also placed 'first in the National Greek Sight Contest, and first in the All Souls Ancient History Essay Essay Contest. She is currently completing the requirements requirements for the ARCT at the Royal Conservatory and will begin graduate studies in the fall of 1992. Miss Traill is the daughter of Prof, and Mrs. John Traill of Bowmanville, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Cox of Whiting, New Jersey. Scholarship Winner Kimberly Werry Kimberly Werry, daughter of Glenn and Barb Werry Werry of Solina, recently received a Canada Scholarship of Science and Technology. To earn this scholarship one of the qualifications is a student; must enter first year university with an 85% average. The scholarship is worth $2,000.00 per year and is renewable for four years for an overall worth of $8,000.00, providing the student maintains an 80% average. Kim received congratulatory congratulatory letters from both the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney and the Minister Minister of Science, the Hon William Winegard. Fewer than 10 percent of the students entering first-year Science and Engineering are Canada Scholars. Kim is a graduate graduate of Courtice Secondary School and is currently enrolled enrolled at Trent University in Peterborough, majoring in Geography, hoping to complete a degree in Teaching. Teaching. Eastern Star Begins New Year with Installation Ceremonies The new officers of Durham Durham Chapter #181, O.E.S. were installed in an impressive ceremony on Tuesday, October 22. The ceremony was conducted conducted by Mrs. Audrey Martin, Past Grand Matron and Mr. Kenneth Sumcrsford, Grand Trustee, they were ably assisted assisted by Mrs. Shirley Grcenham, P.M. as Installing Marshal, Mrs. Jean Davis, P.M., Peterborough Peterborough as Installing Chaplain and Mrs. Eleanor Jones, P.D.D.G.M., as Installing Organist. Organist. The Floral Ceremony was presented by Mrs. Greta Brown, P.M. and several other Past Matrons of Durham Chapter Chapter assisted in the installation. The soloists for the occasion were Mrs. Jean Sumcrsford, P.M., Mrs. Vi Barton and Mrs. Lynda Clements W.M. of Laurel Laurel Chapter, Toronto. Many members and friends from Peterborough, Madoc, Marmora, Oshawa, Whitby, Port Perry and Toronto were present to congratulate Mrs. Norma Lewis, the new Worthy Matron and Mr. Elgin Green- ham, the new Worthy Patron, and their corps of officers. Mrs. Norma Lewis and Mr. Elgin Greenham both expressed expressed their appreciation at being elected to serve in these offices and are looking forward to another happy and successful successful year for Durham Chapter. At the close of the meeting, everyone retired to the banquet hall for refreshments and a time of fellowship. During the previous year, Durham Chapter supported many local causes with generous generous donations, the largest going going to Community Care, the immediate Past Matron's project project for her year. The Chapter also supported the Grand Chapter of Ontario's projects of E.S.T.A.R.L. and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. 101 awards of $675.00 each were given to students in religious leadership and a cheque for $55,000.00 was presented to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Foundation at the annual Session in September. In November, a number of Durham's members will be travelling to St. Louis, Missouri Missouri for the General Grand Chapter Chapter Assembly which is held every three years in the state or province of the Most Worthy Grand Matron. by Audrey Martin Publicity Convener.
