The Canadian S talesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 30,1991 3 Around tie Region OSHAWA--On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Ncwcastlc-Oshawa-Whitby United Way pushed past the $1 million spot. The fund-raising agency was already into its fifth week of this year's campaign. The key to the success of the 1991 effort ' is more volunteers with more time to work. The employee payroll deduction plan has also paid off for the United Way coffers. The staff at Oshawa General Hospital have donated more this year to the United Way than they did last year. This year, their contribution is $30,000 while last year they contributed $22,000. The United Way helps to support 41 local member agencies. Out of each dollar raised, 91 cents goes towards helping 75,000 people in different ways each year. OSHAWA--The Oshawa municipal and regional election is shaping up and the Hilstone project for the downtown business core is proving to be the biggest single issue. Incumbent Mayor Allan Mason, Ward 7 Councillor Nancy Diamond, city planner Robert Lutezyk, teacher-researcher Tom Niçois and businessman Rosaldo Russo have set their sights on the mayor's chair at Oshawa City Hall. Mayor Mason wants to set up a task force to look into economic and safety issues in downtown Oshawa and he wants to see the Hilstone project get under way. Ms Diamond does not believe that Oshawa can afford to finance the $250 million Hilstone proposal and she adds that Oshawa needs to put a "strategic plan" into place for the building up of the city. Mr. Lutezyk supports the Hilstone proposal and advocates a university for the downtown core. Mr. Nichols says civic problems can be resolved through a combination of research, education and common sense. Mr. Russo simply tells people he will do his best and will lean on his work experience to do so. <_ All Candidates Meeting Ward Three November 7,7:30 p.m. Newcastle Village Town Hall Newcastle Village Chamber of Commerce sikkens Translucent Interior Finishes Cetol TS Interior Satin Cetol TS Interior Gloss Central Paint and Wallpaper 295 Ritson Rd.
