> Kelly Not Too Sharp With Maritime Cities The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, November 6,1991 11 Boys and Girls Harrier Teams Capture First Place for Knox Christian School Dear Editor It was with some amusement amusement that I read the article "Tips For Our Correspondents" Correspondents" by your sports writer, Brad Kelly, in the October 23 issue of your paper. My amusement stemmed from the fact that Mr. Kelly was providing advice to the State- man's sports correspondents on how to write their submissions, submissions, when, for the past month, I have been debating whether to write and comment comment on an error that was repeated repeated several times by Mr. Kelly in his own writing. In three separate issues of your paper, including the October October 23 edition, Mr. Kelly referred to the participation of the Clarke High School senior boys' volleyball team in the Canadian Classic volleyball volleyball tournament at Dalhou- sie University in New Brunswick. Brunswick. As a graduate of Dalhousic University, I cannot cannot say that I remember spending loo much time in New Brunswick, except to pass through on my way back and forth to Ontario. In fact, Dalhousic University is located located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and I have very fond memories memories of my time spent in that province. Perhaps, Mr. Kelly should have added one more point to his "Tips For Our Correspondents" Correspondents" article, that being "Geographical Accuracy." It's bad enough that many people are ignorant of world geography, never mind that of our own country. By the way, I am also a graduate of Clarke High School, and am always pleased to read that Clarke's sports teams continue to do well, locally and further afield. Yours sincerely, Kathy Dennis Garden Hill Dear Ms Dennis: We have published your letter as it was received, including the error on line nine in reference to our paper. For 137 years, we have been known as The STATESMAN (that's with an "S"), not the Stateman as you referred. A slight oversight oversight on your part, no doubt. Indeed, it is an imperfect world in which we live. --Brad Kelly Close 5-4 Contest Goes to Sand & Gravel Last Week by Kim Gadd Sand & Gravel battled it out against Kool Enterprises Tuesday Tuesday evening, ending with a 5-4 loss. First goal of the evening went to Sand & Gravels' Clayton Clayton Guest, assisted by Owen Taylor and Charlie Hargest. The second period put an exciting four goals on the scoreboard, three of which were for Kool. Jeff Dart had two while A1 McCullough had the other. Scott McAleese, assisted assisted i by Ryan Leppert, put one home for Sand & Gravel. A busy third found another four goals on the board. Kools' Jeff Dart popped his third of the evening. Rob Watson quickly retaliated for Sand & Gravel. Jeff Dart broke away with yet another goal for Kool. Rob Watson again returned the action action unassisted for Sand & Gravel. End result -- 5-4 for Kool Enterprises. On Saturday, November 2, Sand &' Gravel defeated McGregor's 2-1 in an exciting league game. Peter Gadd dropped the puck back to Rob Watson who neatly tucked it in McGregor's net scoring the first goal for Sand & Gravel. Sean Broome answered back for McGregor's, aided by Wes Thompson and Bill La- vigne. Peter Gadd slapped in the winning goal for Sand & Gravel Gravel when the puck was passed back from the faceoff by Les. McCrory. Sand & Gravel's Steven Sargent and McGregor's Brian (Pickman) Pickard managed to keep the scoreboard at 2-1 for the remainder of the game. Good goaltending, guys! Coaches Kevin Kellachan and Scott Young for Sand & Gravel were pleased with their team's impressive efforts in a game well played. Mr. Kellachan was especially especially impressed with David Drummond, who, "poured on some excellent body-checking for a fellow who doesn't normally normally check, in turn taking his opponents out of the play," said Kellachan. "It really helps when each player docs his share." Keep up the good work, team! First Win of Season for Young Drivers Novices Alter a slow start, Young Drivers novices put in a solid effort Saturday, November 2, skating to their first win of the season. Young Drivers got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Chris Laton assisted by Jason Homer and Philip Fracz in the first period. In the second period, Young Drivers and Carters played a By Brad Kelly Too Early to hit The Panic Button Did anyone else notice the unusual gust of wind that swept through Bowmanville late on Friday evening? Unable to figure out the cause for it, we tuned into CHEX in Peterborough to see if the weather- people had an explanation. They didn't. We did manage to get àn explanation. But it came during the sportscast. Quickly, a score was flashed from the Central Ontario Junior C league. Bowmanville had defeated defeated Uxbridge, 7-3. i So, the gust of wind was a collective sigh of relief that the players and coaching staff let out upon their arrival back in town following the garnie. They had just proven to themselves that they could beat another team in the league other than Lakefield. Things around the Recreation Complex the past couple of Sunday nights haven't been the same. In a departure from the usual schedule, the Eagles were on the road in Lakefield, and then off the following following week. It will be interesting to see the reaction reaction of the coaching staff to the way the Eagles have stumbled but of the gates when they return this Sunday. We suspect, there won't be any reaction at all. Let's go back to last year at this time. The Eagles finished the first month of the season as the best team in the league. In fact, they enjoyed a perfect October with an 8-0 record, Everything was perfect. But then came November, and the Eagles began to fall back to the rest of the pack. And what about December? Well, with a 2-5-1 record, nobody did any talking. By the end of the season, they had slipped to third place, only three points ahead of Little Britain Britain who were fifth. It meant nothing. Bowmanville cruised to the league finals, where they were beaten by one goal in the seventh game. So, despite having a dismal start to this season, it "means very little in the overall picture. When you break the team down, there are some excuses for their 3-5-1 start. For the first half dozen of games, they were without without a complete lineup. Their best eight players were relegated to the stands due to injuries and suspen- 1 sions. Players were shuffled in and out of lineup for every game. The juggling of the lineup made it impossible for anyone, including the coaching staff, to get a gauge on how good, or weak, this team is, The upcoming month should clear up that picture, For now, everything is just for fun. Accomplishments Accomplishments during the regular season mean very little, The games are just an extension of the exhibition schedule, It's what a team does during the playoffs that counts. very close game but Chris La- ton notched his second goal of the game, assisted by Matt Brown, Young Drivers' Chris Laton opened up the third period, scoring his third goal unassisted. unassisted. Carters' Neil Lcgrce replied replied with an unassisted goal of his own. Near the last five minutes, Young Drivers' Chris Laton turned on the jets, scoring three more times for an impressive six goals in the game. Assists went to Philip Fracz, Brad Copping and Robert Cummer. Goalie Jason Kewell for Young Drivers played an outstanding outstanding game, almost getting a shutout. Jason was given good defensive support from Phil Hopkins, Brad Wood, Brad Copping, Matt Brown and Ryan Burrows. The final score was Young Drivers 6, Carters 1. A solid team effort Young Drivers!
