10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, November 6,1991 Section Two Education Bowmanville High School Happenings Co-operative education, or more commonly known as simply simply co-op is a program offered at many high schools in Ontario, Ontario, including BHS. Basically, rather than sitting in a classroom classroom learning about a specific type of occupation, you arc given the opportunity to get out into the workforce while earning credits towards your diploma. It works on a symbiotic symbiotic system, students are given on the job training in exchange for credits while employers are given free help in exchange for some time spent training the students. I spent two years trying to get into the co-op program. In grade 111 had my heart set on becoming an accountant. So, after a year of accounting, I tried to get a placement at a bank, but to no avail, one year was not enough to beat out students students with two or three years under their belts. In grade 12 my interests had changed and television broadcasting was to be my new passion. So, of course, I applied to Rogers Cable 10 for a job. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, they were understaffed at the time and they simply couldn't take on the responsibility responsibility of a co-op student. Undaunted Undaunted in my OAC year, I Vincent Massey Team is Having Successful Year Our soccer team, has been very successful. They won their first game 3 to 0 against Wavcrlcy and their second game was 2 to 1 over Central. During the regular season they lost only one game which sent them to the semi finals with Wavcrlcy. They defeated Wavcrlcy Wavcrlcy 3 to 1. It all came down to the final game against Ontario Ontario Street. Despite a valiant effort effort they lost 2 to 0. All the players agreed that they had had a great soccer season. The fullbacks were Kevin Ormis- ton, Adam Van Londen, Colleen Colleen O'Reilly, Sara O'Reilly, Rebecca Black, and Sarah Morrison. The half backs included included Rachel Okc, Brandi Co- nohan, Jennifer Cowan, Ryan Eccles, Ian Ball, Jamie Potter, Joel Osborne, and the team forwards forwards were Emily Muir, Karen Rickard, Donnie Gee, Daniel Dcbcau, Lordelle Greenyear, and Andy Griffin, Ryan Ormis- ton and Andrew Wraith. The coaches Mrs. Bryan and Mr. Ralfc would like to thank the team for playing with skill and good sportsmanship. by Rachel Oke There were many scary and eerie creatures in our halls last Thursday. Hallowe'en has never never been celebrated so well at our school. Their were witches, ghosts, monsters, princesses, cowboys, clowns, rabbits, dragons, dinosaurs, Ninja turtles, turtles, even Robin Hood was there and even one of the trees from Sherwood forest: We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable October 31. Approximately once a month all of the co-op students get together at the school and discuss their placements with other students. I recently attended attended the first of such meetings meetings and I was impressed. I St. Stephen's Presents Play Nov. 14,15 The St. Stephen's O.A.C. Drama Class is presently working working day and night in preparation preparation for the presentation of their cabaret, "A Twist of Life" on November 14 and 15 in St. Stephen's High School Auditorium. Auditorium. The play is set in a trendy restaurant named Rcmi's. It involves involves four women, each in a different phase in a romantic relationship, who through their discussion and interaction with two male waiters provide insight insight into romantic relationships. relationships. Needless to say there are many humorous moments and the popular songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s make this a show that is very easy to get caught up in. Mr. Sheridan, the Drama teacher at St. Stephen's High School, who has made St. Stephen's Stephen's past successes in productions productions possible, added this new dimension to a cabaret by collaborating in the writing process with Robin Carrey, an O.A.C. student. This is the first time Mr. Sheridan has worked with a student in this area and he found working with Robin an inspiring experience. He stated,, "the play is relationships relationships through a female perspective perspective and is extremely enlightening enlightening for men to see." Personally, he said it confirmed confirmed his suspicions of how the female psyche works. "This is Robin's baby." stated Mr. Sheridan. Robin feels "A Twist of Life"'is a musical, comedy that talks about romance. She has based it on her own personal relationships, and her friends and family's. "Each character in the play is everyone at different different stages in life. What the characters go through is common common to everyone at one point or another in their life," stated Robin. The message she wanted to relay to her audience is to see humour even when things arc going bad. Robin explained, "to show change comes in life, live with it and enjoy it." There is also a wealth of talent talent in the area of acting. There are accomplished actors and actresses such as Sarah Gogin, Angela Day and John Robi- chaud who were successes in last spring's production of Blood Wedding. There is also fresh talent. Mr. Sheridan stated stated that this balance creates a nice dimension. The experienced experienced actors and actresses set a pace for the others and set a high expectation level. The result result is in a great cast, and a high-quality performance. Don't forget the performance performance dates are November 14 and 15, at St. Stephen's High School in the auditorium. There arc two shows a night, one at 7:00 p.m. and the other at 9:00 p.m. Tickets arc available available at the door. Senior Citizens are welcome to attend a dress rehearsal for free on Wednesday Wednesday November 13 at 7:00 p.m. It promises to bo a great show! So, don't miss your chance to catch "A Twist of Life" at St. Stephen's High School. by. Nicole George WOODSTOVESAND Fireplace Inserts fireplace Plus' 900 Hopkins St. at Burns Whitby 668-3192 thought that my placement was fairly spectacular but in my group alone there was a guy working in a custom wood working shop, making tables and chairs out of raw pieces of wood, another guy works as a mechanic for the Durham Regional Regional Police in Oshawa, one of the girls in my group is working at a horse farm, and is already taking full responsibility responsibility for her own horses. But, by far the most interesting person was a guy named Mike, Mike is working in a welding shop for the time being, however, his ultimate goal is to one day work for the military as an underwater underwater welder. He explained that this particular occupation pays $220.00 per hour but the average life expectancy fpr someone in that line of work is two years from the time they start. Whatever your ambitions arc, co-op is the place for you. I have learned more than I ever could have in a classroom after only two months on the job. I now know what aspects of the job I like and don't like, and what kind of pay I can expect in certain areas. And if I decide to pursue television broadcasting broadcasting in post secondary studies, I am already one up on someone that didn't have the opportunity opportunity to lake part in the co-op program. program. I strongly recommend that anybody who is still in high school to give co-op a try, the earlier you get in on it, the longer you can lake advantage of it.
