Clifford is a Hero toVincent Massey Students Education The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 20,1991 7 Remembrance Day Service Has New Meaning for BHS President [ ; ' Grade one students from Vincent Massey Public School have been learning a ; lot lately from Clifford, the big red hero from one of their most popular books. In : an effort to be more like Clifford, students were practicing good manners, sharpening sharpening their reading and writing skills, and having fun measuring things. Laura . Preston and Micheal Finlay used a wooden stick last Wednesday, to guess the : height of this cardboard cut-out of Clifford the Big Red Dog. When I woke up last Monday, Monday, November 11th, I was struck by this sinking feeling deep in my stomach. It was Remembrance Remembrance Day. One of the duties of the Prime-Minister is to read aloud about Remembrance Remembrance Day at an assembly for the entire school. Due to circumstances circumstances beyond my control, control, I had been unable to attend attend school the previous Friday and therefore felt very unprepared. unprepared. I spent half an hour rummaging rummaging through the house, searching high and low for a shirt, tie and sports jacket to wear. The whole time thinking about how Remembrance Day was for elderly people and was nothing more than an excuse for the government to close their offices. I arrived at school and found Mr. Morris, the teacher in charge of the assembly, and picked up a little speech that I was to read. It was about the sacrifices made by those who died in the war and it questioned questioned the willingness of those of us who enjoy the freedom, that they died for, to sacrifice. I had read it but I wasn't really listening. I had to return to my van to get my sports jacket. On my way back to the school, I ran into a friend of mine whom I had gone to school with since kindergarten. We weren't that close so it surprised me to sec him in a military uniform. He explained to me that he was a part of the militia and it was his duty to wear his uniform on Remembrance Day. Without really thinking I said to him, "so if there's a war, you want to go and fight in it." He replied that nobody want to go and fight and he FRANK REALTOR W. This made me think of my story about sacrifices. I reread reread it and all of a sudden it struck a little deeper. This guy had joined the militia for no reason other than the fact that he felt it was his duly and although although he hoped that it never came to war, he was prepared to fight for Canada. For the duration of the assembly assembly I listened closely to what the other speakers had to say and when it was over, and everyone stood up for the playing playing of the Last Post and Reveille, Reveille, I spotted my friend way up at the back saluting and even though I didn't say anything, I really admired what he was doing. doing. By the way, I now feel that Remembrance Day is an important important holiday, not only to remember remember those who die in the world wars, but to think about how lucky we arc to be free and not have to worry about war.
