Robyn Alldred Santa Claus Parade Another whole year has ' gone by and Christmas has snuck up upon us again, along with another Santa Claus Parade. Parade. A time for children, adults, family and friends to get out and have fun. The little kids especially like watching the parade and impatiently wait for Santa Claus. This year was the annual parades 30th anniversary. The parade was held on November 16, 1991, beginning at 10:00 and going through town, starting starting at Central Public School. The students at B.S.P.S. willingly helped, by dressing up and walking in the parade. Over 50 students signed up. Everyone -had fun and were happy to come out and see all the people. The students dressed up as clowns, animals and more. I even saw goldy locks and the three bears. I was a clown, and all the clowns handed out candy (bought by ourselves), but there were so many kids, that we ran out of candy fast. After that, we went around shaking hands and running around having having fun. I really had fun this year and I hope you did too. I guess we will have to wait another another whole year for the next Santa Claus Parade. For now, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I hope to see you next year at the 1992 Santa Claus Parade. Krista Tink Gr. 8. Director of Planning and Development Date of Publication: November 27,1991 High School was the Worst Thing That Ever Happened to Me . I recently received a letter from a girl who left BHS two years ago and after a year of university was forced to come home because she could no longer afford to go away to school. She didn't see BHS the same way that I did. She has spent the last two years trying to forget the previous five. She felt that she never fit into any of the cliques at BHS and she's probably right, many people don't fit into any of the established established groups around the school. But that doesn't mean that high school can't be fun. Before I made my way onto student's council, quite by accident accident I might add, in grade 10, I didn't really fit into any groups either, I had one or two friends and every so often I would see "the popular people" walk by and wonder what it would be like to fit in. That was four years ago, I now sit beside those same people people in the cafeteria, in my classes, and at parties but when I want to go to a movie or stay at home and play Nintendo, it's still the same one or two friends that I call up. Because being in a clique is not all it's cracked up to be, I find that in order to maintain any kind of status in a group, there is a lot of effort involved, effort that I never really felt to be worthwhile. worthwhile. I have a feeling that what I Constitutional reform is about many things. But mostly it's about you. As Canadians, we are now facing one of the most important challenges in our history. Proposals have been put forward by the Government of Canada to improve our Constitution. These proposals, for a more united and prosperous Canada in which all Canadians can feel at home, are currently being reviewed by a special parliamentary committee. They will also be considered by a series of conferences run by independent Canadian organizations. Some of the proposals include: f a Canada clause that speaks of our hopes and dreams as Canadians, our values, oui - diversity, our tolerance and our generosity of spirit * recognizing the right of aboriginal peoples to govern themselves while being protected by Canadian law * ensuring recognition of Quebec's distinctiveness distinctiveness and of minority language groups * reforming the Senate to make it elected, effective and much more equitable than it is now * strengthening Canada's economic union so Canadians can work and conduct business anywhere in the country * guaranteeing property rights. I don't pretend to know everything about high school, life, that's why I'm always looking for input from people who see things differently than I do, but my advice to anyone who feels stuck, either in or out of a clique, is to just be yourself. That philosophy seems to have worked for me, sure, it's gotten me into trouble a few times but it also got me elected to students' council. So, you can take that to mean whatever you like. I would like to mention again how much I appreciate the mail I get. If you have a question or comment please send it to me and I'll do my best to answer or discuss it in my column. Our competitive edge will secure the prosperity we want for - ourselves and our children. Prosperity Prosperity that's measured not only by productivity productivity but by better jobs, greater opportunities for young Canadians, support for health, social and senior citizen programs - and more. We can achieve it by investing in our own abilities and being a country that says... yes we can. Yes we can. We've got the proof. A look at some of Canada's success stories proves it can be done... with real benefits for individuals, the communities they live in and for Canadian industry. Hundreds of Canadian companies are achieving remarkable international international success. They're creating jobs, developing new skills and opportunities opportunities for thousands of Canadians and creating markets around the world for Canadian products, Yes we can. We've got the ability to build on our successes. We have a history of working in co-operation with others for world class achievements in peacekeeping, medicine and space exploration. But there is one more critical factor: Canada's ultimate ultimate potential depends on the commitment commitment of individual Canadians. Yes we can. We've got the people. It's time now to unite around our greatest economic challenge yet... preparing for a prosperous future. As individuals, there's a lot we can do. Put yourself in the picture through further education or skills development programs. As parents, we can encourage our children to stay in school longer and start career planning activities sooner. As employers, we can think of training as a business investment and encourage a work environment where excellence and a commitment to learning are celebrated. Finally, as Canadians, we can become a positive part of the process through involvement involvement in the consultations on our economic future.
