l 18 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, June 3,1992 Around the School Board by Bob Willsher Trustee--Ward III Former Students of Newcastle Village High School Hold Reunion ' 1 sjssm X* The staff, students and parents of Newcastle Public School and Bowmanvillc Bowmanvillc High School arc to be congratulated congratulated for their success in waste management. Both schools have demonstrated demonstrated leadership in reducing the amount of waste produced and the board has been recognized by the Ministry of the Environment by way of a $16,500 grant. The grant will be used to develop a handbook and video based on their waste audit and management management programs. This project, under the leadership of Superintendent Trudy Lum, will result result in a model that will be used throughout the province. Newcastle Public School has been able to reduce its garbage by two-thirds. This level of reduction will have a significant positive impact on the environment if every school in Ontario can follow their lead. In addition, the board could save more than $100,000 in garbage pick-up costs by reducing the number of pick-ups required. They are tmly living up to our motto of "Leaders in Learning!" In another area of environmental activities and cost reduction our board has been also identified as leaders in the province. Under the direction of John Stccyck, Manager of Plant Operations, Operations, the board will invest $3.4 million million to improve energy efficiency at 27 existing schools. The cost will be recovered through savings generated by the improvements and incentives from Ontario Hydro. The project will cover a five year period. - At the last board meeting, a cheque in the amount of $153,000 was presented presented by Ontario Hydro to cover the cost for the feasibility study. This is the first installment of incentives [which will amount to approximately $1.6 million over the period. Ontario Hydro estimates the savings in energy will help reduce the need to build additional additional hydro facilities. This project will reduce the board's demand for electricity and the reduction will be equivalent to the electrical demands of 800 new homes. The board has endorsed a special program to help increase awareness of the dangers of solar 'radiation. With .summer just around the comer parents need to make sure children arc not at risk. The Canadian Cancer Society's "Slip, Slop, Slap" program will be part of the program the board will be implementing. Parents can get more information from their local school. On May 5, 1992 Pierre Blais, Minister Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Affairs announced the Government is dividing dividing Bill C-22. The government, according to a recent bulletin from the Canadian School Boards Association, will proceed with bankruptcy amendments amendments but not the wage protection fund. This will mean no payroll tax as originally proposed. School Boards, and other government bodies, had opposed opposed the tax because it would simply add more cost to the taxpayers without without that cost being justified. It simply [didn't make any sense for school boards, colleges and other public organizations organizations to pay a tax in the event of ' bankruptcy. On Wednesday, June 3, local trustee trustee and administration will meet with some members of council and town staff to continue our discussions on ways of implementing cost reductions through joint .services or programs. ! This is an excellent exercise because the taxpayer will benefit in the long run. There arc many ways that the board and the town can join together to meet the needs of the taxpayers. Hopefully, this next meeting will set out some specific activities to focus on those areas where savings can be realized. R.L. Willsher 987-4845.
