The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 3,1992 7 r By Brad Kelly ; My Round With Golf's Living Legend , Five minutes after parking my car in the driveway of the Maples of Ballantrae Golf Course in Stouffville, it was evident that I didn't belong with the assembled group. My vehicle was one of the few without the aerial that protrudes protrudes from the rear of a car equipped for cellular phone reception. reception. The Stouffville course was hosting the annual Ontario Community Community Newspaper Association golf tournament. , The fact that the tournament is on a Friday, enabling all the v shirts and ties of the industry to make a long weekend out of it, is merely a coincidence. • The Limited Thoughts columnist from the editorial page 1 (aka Rick James, fourth in command at The Statesman behind .father John, mother Dorothy and wife Kim) and I attended the I tournament. To make him happy, I must note that Rick won the tournament, tournament, firing a 77 to finish ahead of over 90 other duffers. He actually tied, but the coin toss -- the best tie-breaking scheme that these people who operate million-dollar businesses could come up with -- fell in his favour. That's as far as the accolades will go. Barely able to afford a round of golf, renting a cart has always always been out of the question. I hadn't even ridden shotgun in one before. That changed. Walking the course while playing was totally out of the question for the movers and shakers of the industry. Their idea of fitness is watching the one-minute Body Break slots on K Canadian television. Their waistlines will back that up. Golf carts were lined up for them like cars on the starting grid of the Indy 500.1, too, fell into the trap. , ; ■ Just prior to teeing up the first ball, I sat in a panic in the ' cart, unable to find where the forward gear was. Too embar- : ■ rassed to ask for help, I took a chance that putting the pedal to the floor would do one of two things: move the cart forward, or , bring enough attention to my situation that someone would of- Yferhelp. Luckily, the cart rolled forward. > It was my first time on the golf course this year, and it showed. A brand new ball, part of a package of six I received for Christmas, had a very short life span. One shot. Long grass to the left of the fairway ate-my tee shot. There would be more of the same. A pond just in front of the , 1 green swallowed the drive on the second hole. I left four of the new balls hidden in various ponds and wooded areas on the course before the day concluded. The highlight of the day, in addition to stealing the honours from the tournament champion on a few occasions, came from the third member of our golfing party. Without an aerial attached attached to the golf cart, he pulled out a cordless phone on two different occasions to check in with the office. It resembled a scene from the movie Caddyshack, minus the music and stocked cooler. a My round was a decent one. A 90 was good enough to place me in the top 15. It would have been better if I was able to keep score. The best wood in my bag has always been a pencil with an eraser on the end. However, the best part of the day was my prize: a roll of Trim. Just what a guy in this industry needs. i - /■ . ' . ' • SUMMER DAY CAMPS | The Town of Newcastle Community Services j Department will be running their Summer Day Camps | again this summer.
