Today's bride and groom have many choices in wedding bands Josie, a newlywed from New York City, was disappointed with her wedding wedding gifts. Although she had carefully registered for the china, crystal, and flatware patterns she wanted, most of her guests neglected to find out where. Instead, Josie received eight vases, five picture frames, three sugar-and-cream- er sets, and only one-and-a-half place settings. She had hoped to begin entertaining entertaining friends at home right away, but all her free time after the wedding was spent returning unwanted gifts and haggling with salespeople. The bridal registry will take the guesswork out of wedding gifts, but only if it's used correctly by the couple and their guests. Here, from Bride's magazine, are twelve golden rules for, smooth and successful registering: 1. Register three to six months before the wedding. If you register earlier, earlier, some seasonal patterns and promotional promotional items may be out of season by. your wedding day. 2. Visit the store during off hours, to examine patterns and consider choices in a relaxed and tranquil environment. 3. Give yourselves plenty of time. These are important decisions, and you should think them over. Many brides- to-be first come in alone to narrow down their selections, then return with their fiances to make final decisions. 4. ' Take advantage of registry consultants. consultants. These experts are invaluable sources of advice about everything from wedding etiquette to bone china. 5. Be descriptive. Don't write down just any number on the registry form-*-- it may not be the style number. Include as much description as space allows. 6. Register in a price range. Include high-priced gifts for guests who can afford them, less-expensive gifts for shower guests and guests on limited budgets. 7. Use your imagination. China, crystal, silver, linen, and housewares are classic wedding gifts--and perennial perennial favorites with brides and grooms--but consider registering for furniture, sports and camping equipment, equipment, gardening tools, computers, stereos. Several specialty stores and mail-order catalogues now offer registries registries as well, for gifts from antiques to CDs. 8. Don't overlap. Register for each item in one store only, otherwise you will go crazy keeping track of gifts that have and haven't been purchased. 9. Never announce your registration registration in wedding invitations -- this implies that gifts are as important to you as guests. Friends and family can make sure word gets out. 10. Save mailing labels from the packages you receive. If you decide to return the gift, the label may be your only proof of purchase. 11. Keep a running gift list. Make a note of each item you receive, who sent it, and any thoughts that come to mind when you unwrap it. This will make writing thank-you notes easier; once gifts start piling up, cards are easily easily misplaced, and your memory becomes unreliable. ^ - , __ becomes unreliable. Sleeping Together: The First Night Effect Rv TIB THVrr DDHTurnc By DR. JOYCE BROTHERS The term "sleeping together" is a common euphemism for sex, but not all sexual.partners share the intimacy of the same bed throughout the night. To many people, sleep is more private and vulnerable than sex. And, how well a couple actually sleeps together can affect their entire relationship. According to Dianne Hales, author of The Complete Book of Sleep: How Your Nights Affect Your Days, "The first night you spend with someone is like a first date in darkness: You are on your best sleep behavior." She notes that new lovers often relinquish a preferred preferred side of the bed or their customary customary sleep position in order to hold or be held by their bedmate. "The night may be romantic but, for many reasons, you aren't likely to sleep well," explains Hales. Sleep experts actually have a name for this unique form of sleeplessness. • Although the slender gold band is still a popular choice among couples pledging their troth,^today's bride 1 and groom have more options in wedding bands than ever before. Couples often select their bands together, making certain that their, choice in rings is as much a reflection reflection of their personal style as a symbol symbol of their love. ; Diamonds, multi-hued or textured gold, and even colored stones are some of the latest fashions in wedding bands today, according to Jewelers of America, the national organization dedicated to consumer education and information about fine jewelry. And that's not for the woman's band only. Today's modem groom is opting for more style in. his wedding band,'as well. According to recent statistics, 90 percent of all grooms received a wedding wedding band in 1990. Of that group, one in five (or 20 percent) opted for a diamond diamond wedding band. A man's diamond - Wedding band design tends to be quite masculine, with square-shaped stones ôr a geometric setting. - ; Brides are also opting for diamonds: Approximately 35 percent of all brides select a wedding band adorned with diamonds to be worn with their engagement ring. Flush and channel-set diamonds of any size can add considerable luster and style to a traditional gold band. Diamond wedding band designs can vary from a single row of small squareshaped squareshaped stones to three or more "levels" of round or marquise-shaped diamonds weighing tip to a carat or more. Some of today's latest styles even feature a prominent center diamond, either Tiffany or bezel-set, flanked by smaller-shaped smaller-shaped stones. Textured and multi-colored gold bands -- with or without stones of any kind -- are also readily available to couples today. Yellow gold, brushed and textured to a rich matte finish, gives traditional wedding bands an entirely new look. Combinations of yellow, white and pink gold also are quite striking for either husband or wife, as are simple bands inlaid with square or rectangular shaped onyx or lapis lazuli. How does a couple make this special choice of a lifetime? It begins with doing business with a jeweler they can trust. A local, professional jeweler has a wide selection of wedding band designs from which to choose, and can tailor the selection to anyone's style and budget. •ACCORDING TO DR JOYCE BROTHERS, how well a couple sleeps tdgètti- er can have a profound affect on their marital happiness. Before You Say , ■' ' 'I Do ... The "first night effect" is not limited to the first night of sleeping with someone. someone. People in "commuter marriages". who see each other only on weekends, military couples, and couples in which one partner is a frequent traveler are forced to continually adjust to each other's sleep styles, prolonging the "first night effect" indefinitely. The "first night effect" often has more impact on women, who generally sleep less deeply than men, say sleep researchers. And, because they weigh less, women are more likely disturbed by their partner's dozens of nightly tossings and turnings. Since it takes at least 10 minutes of undisturbed sleep before deep "delta" sleep can develop, someone who's not accustomed to another person's sleep movements and noises will sleep lightly -- if at all. The obvious solution is to sleep together consistently enough to adjust to each other, and to work out compromises compromises for incompatible sleep styles or rituals. Large beds (queen- or king- size), dual-control electric blankets and small reading lights help to save a lot, of relationships. If all else fails, separate separate beds or separate rooms may bring a couple closer together by separating the'm when they need to jjfet'more sleep.- • • - r .
