Prior to the start of Sunday's game, Eagles manager, Mike Laing, presented Shane Armstrong with the puck that was used in the game when he scored his 60th goal of the year. His achievement broke a' league record which was set in 1979-80. Shane finished the year with 63 goals in only 37 games. NEWAC Swimmers Set New Records On the snowy weekend of January 29-31, 26 NEWAC swimmers travelled travelled to Kincardine to compete in their first annual invitational, hosted by the Owen Sound Aquatic Club. There is no competitive swimming team in Kincardine, and the meet was the idea of the town mayor. Meet manager Pat Wise was very happy to have us attend, and in her words, "Newcastle made the meet." While undersubscribed, the meet did provide an excellent opportunity for our swimmers to experience preliminaries preliminaries and finals. The meet was Major Bantam Wolves Playing Quarter Finals The Central Ontario major bantam bantam Wolves 'AAA' hockey team is looking for some support from area fans as they host game three of their best-of-five quarter-final series against Peterborough on Wednesday, Wednesday, February 24 in the Newcastle Village Arena at 8:00 p.m. The Wolves, who finished in first place in the East Division, advanced after defeating Quinte in three straight games. This is a perfect performance record for a meet. Three swimmers were one event short of all best limes. This cannot be looked upon as falling short- of the mark, but as a tremendous accomplishment. accomplishment. Dave James, Peter Frisina and Michelle Vonhatten had best times in all but one event. Swim of the Meet - Dave James was ranked second going into the finals finals of the 100m Breastroke after a very easy preliminary swim. He exe.- cuted his race strategy for the final swim flawlessly. He followed at the shoulder of the lane three swimmer and passed him after the third turn to put touch his competitor at the wall. The place judge's decision, however, however, gave the win to the Owen Sound swimmer. That one has to hurt a little, Dave. It was a lifetime best and a great swim! The Bowmanville minor bantam Toros, sponsored by the Kinsmen Club, advanced to the second round of the playoffs by defeating Ajax c 3-2 in Ajax, to take the series three games to one. The first period saw the Toros take the game to Ajax and they were unlucky unlucky not to be up by at least three goals at the end of the period. All three forward lines, of the Toros had chances to score, but some good goaltending goaltending by the Ajax keeper kept them at bay. At the other end of the rink, Jeff Parry, in goal, did not have too much to do but was called upon to make a good save near the end of the period to keep the score 0-0. The second period started the same way, with the Toros pressing. Finally, their hard work was rewarded when Ryan Dunnigan took a pass from Scott McDonald and fired a shot that the Ajax keeper could not hold and. Greg McMurter put in the rebound. Twenty seconds later, a shot by Eric Zuvic found its way to the net and Dunnigan was there to make it 2-0. Ajax got a goal back with 1:47 left on the clock and then, with the Toros a man short, they got the equalizer with 24 seconds left to tie the game at 2-2. The winning goal was scored midway midway through the final period when Nick Hand passed the puck out from behind the net right on to the stick of Darryl Cook who made no mistake by one-timing it into the back of the net. The Toros' defence of Craig Schu- Sports Shop Novices Lose to Markham The second round of playoffs turned bad for Sports Shop novices. After losing the- .first game in Markham, the Toros came out to a quick 2-0 lead only to see Markham fight back with five goals. The Toros did manage to get one more, but lost 5-3. Goals were scored by Martin Frampton, Chris Wise and Davyn Dy- mond. Johnathan Ross, Philip Fracz and Nat Fair picked up assists. On Saturday, February 13, the Toros Toros lost the final game 5-1 to Markham, Markham, with the only goal going to Tyson Tyson Crocker, assisted by Jonathan Ross. All the boys tried hard throughout throughout this series. Ajax pulled their goalie in favour of the extra man with two minutes left in the game. After a defeat in the first game of the playoffs against Ajax, the Kinsmen Kinsmen minor bantams came back to win the next two games. Game two was played in Ajax with the Toros starting the game where they left off in game one. They were very hesitant and not playing their normal game. This was reflected at the end of the first period with Ajax leading 2-0. The Toros finally got their act together together at the beginning of the second and scored twice in the opening minute minute to draw level. Both teams then scored three more times to end the period period tied at 5-5. The third period was a defensive battle with Jeff Parry in goal for the Toros having to pull off some acrobatic, acrobatic, saves in the final couple of minutes to stop Ajax from scoring the winning goal. There was no more scoring and the game went into a 10 minute overtime period. Paul Lavallee scored after just 58 seconds and Ajax were never able to get back into the game. The Kinsmen team scored four more times to win 10-5. Goal-scorers included Paul Lavallee Lavallee (2), Derek Arnold (2), Matt Staley (2), Darryl Cook, Tony Butzer, Ryan Jobb, Greg McMurter. Assists went to Nick Hand (2), Eric Zuvic (2), Mike Ferguson,. Ryan Dunnigan, Adam Millar, Lavallee, Cook, Arnold, McMurter, Staley. Game three, played in Darlington, was a better game for the Toros, despite despite a lapse midway through the game when Ajax fought back to within within one. The result was never in doubt, with the final score 5-2 in favour of the Toros. Cameron Millar in net for the Toros Toros was the hero of the defence, stifling stifling the Ajax comeback with some terrific saves. Greg McMurter led the offense with a hat-trick. Tony Butzer and Chuck Maher had one apiece. Matt Brake, Paul Lavallee, Eric Zuvic and Adam Millar chipped in with assists. Pizza Pizza Atoms Play In Grafton Tournament On Saturday, February 13, BRHL Pizza Pizza atoms played in the Grafton Grafton Atom Tournament. The first game was against Co- bourg Dutch Oven. There was no scoring in the first period, and finally in the second, Ryan Hill scored. Then, Shawn Watson broke into the clear and made a perfect shot from right wing with the assist going to Patrick O'Halloran. This left the game at a 2- 2 tie and into. overtime. After four minutes, each team had only one player on the ice and the goalies. Pizza Pizza Pizza's Iain Forsythe skated away from the Cobourg player and made a nice deke to put the Pizza boys in the winner's circle. The second game was another tough contest against Grafton Northumberland Northumberland Heights. In the first period, Pizza's Jamie Parry fired in a point shot while shorthanded. This game also went into overtime and was a real nail-biter right to the end. Pizza Pizza only had two forwards and their goalie goalie in the third overtime when Pizza's Dave Corcoran was called for a penalty penalty which resulted in a penalty shot for Grafton. Pizza's sharp goalie, Mike Luxton, made a fabulous pad save to keep the Pizza crew in the game. Then, defenceman Brandon Baker had to go it alone against the two Grafton forwards. In the final overtime, Grafton Grafton scored to put Pizza Pizza out of this tournament. On Sunday, February 14, Pizza Pizza played a regular BRHL game against T-Mac. In the first period, Ryan Hill made a perfect pass to Jason Jason Bakker alone in front of the net and Jason made no mistake to put the Pizzas up 1-0. In the second, Patrick O'Halloran picked up his own rebound rebound in front of the T-Mac.net and scored. Then, in the third period, Kevin Kevin Legge let a slapshot go from the left point and Dave Corcoran picked up the loose puck to put the Pizza boys up 3-1. T-Mac put the pressure on in the third and came back to tie it.
