6 The Canadian Statesman 'WuAeiUoi, Bowmanville, Saturday, April 10,1993 This is one phone split-up that you'll be interested in. The 416 area code is splitting. The new 905 area code will be added to help serve the growing Southern Ontario region's telephone telephone needs. Today's rapidly changing telecommunications telecommunications requirements ... the popularity popularity of cellular telephones, fax machines machines and computer modems, plus such new calling features as Ident-A- Call (TM) ... have resulted in an increasing increasing demand for more telephone numbers in the 416 area code. Beginning October 4, 1993, Metropolitan Metropolitan Toronto will retain the 416 area code. All other communities now served by the 416 area code will then switch to the new 905 area code. An easy way to determine which area code you will be in is by Postal Code. If the first letter of the Postal Code is M, like everyone in Metro Toronto, the area code will remain 416. Postal Codes in the former 416 area, starting with other letters, will change to the new 905 area code. With less than six months until the area code split, it is important that all businesses incorporate this change in their planning. For instance, employees employees and colleagues need to be informed informed about the split. Customers, suppliers and other business contacts will want to be made aware of the area code change. Stationery, packaging, packaging, signage, advertising and other materials may need to be revised to show the new 905 area code. Even if you do not change to the new 905 area code, your company will want to plan to reprogram equipment equipment which stores and dials telephone numbers. Databases with customer information information and employee personnel records will also need to be updated to reflect the correct area code. The introduction of a new area code will not affect the way our customers customers are charged for the calls they make. Calls that are now toll-free will remain so after the new 905 area code is introduced. . : i i However, there will be some changes in the way calls are dialed. For example, a customer calling from Pearson International Airport, which is in Mississauga (905), to downtown Toronto (416), after the changeover, will dial 416 plus the local seven digit telephone number. Conversely, a cus tomer in Metro Toronto will dial 905, plus the local seven digit number, to place a telephone call to the airport, or to any community with which there is local toll-free calling. In both cases, the call will not be a long distance call. A comprehensive communications campaign has been developed to get the message out to customers. Direct mail packages that have been sent to businesses include a toll-free hotline (1-800-465-1416) for any customer questions or concerns.
