Club pins from the early 1900's, old-style uniforms, press clippings, photo albums and trophies from provincial provincial and national championships were just a few of the items that provided provided an in-depth view of the past. And most of it, if not all of it, was made possible through the tireless tireless efforts of Bowmanvillc resident Sheila Dadson. "Sheila has worked for the past four years putting together these displays," displays," said Mary Pollard, a Courtice Courtice resident who was the convener of die 50th Anniversary. She was also the president of the ladies' section section in 1968-69 when they celebrated celebrated their 25th Anniversary. "She got all of it together. Otherwise, Otherwise, I don't know if we would even be here celebrating. Certainly not on this scale." Dadson, the historian for the anniversary, anniversary, came across most of the memorabilia while cleaning out a, games' room at the club. Other items were fetched after numerous calls to area residents who were involved involved with the club in the early days. "I thought instead of throwing things out, we could put the memorabilia memorabilia to better use," she said, as members were putting the final touches on the displays last Friday afternoon. During her findings, she came across sonic material that outlined the first recorded games of curling by Bowmanvillc residents. These games date back as far as 1851. Records show that local curlers won the Ontario Silver Tankard in 1879 over Galt, and were runners- up to Port Hope in 1880 and Toronto Toronto Caledonian in 1882. The teams were comprised of eight men who formed two teams. Blueings were determined by combining combining the total points of both teams. In 1882, Oshawa joined the Ontario Ontario Curling Association. With 35 members from Bowmanvillc, the Oshawa Club entered a team in the Ontario Silver Tankard which placed second to Bobcaygcon in 1893. That was 60 years before any women were allowed in the premises. premises. But that all changed in 1943, when a small group of women gained admittance into the club to try the sport. It wasn't long until they were permitted to use the facilities on a regular basis. Shortly after, they formed their own executive. • Their first bonspiel was held in 1947, and became an annual event. As the popularity of the game increased, increased, so did the membership during during the 1950's, '60's and '70's. In the late 1960's, Pollard can recall recall the club having a ladies' membership membership of close to 200. Both morning morning and afternoon ice time was needed to accommodate die curlers. "Now, a lot of women work, and our membership has gone down," said Dadson. But, that didn't deter the celebrations celebrations on Saturday. Close to 30 past presidents attended the club for the dinner and entertainment provided by the Wilmot Creek Blue Angels on Saturday night. The next celebration slated for the Oshawa Curling Club will be during Fiesta Week, June 21-26. A Kur-ling Pavilion will be in operation operation with a Chinese theme. The ladies' section of the Oshawlt Curling Club celebrated 50 years of membership with.an open house on Saturday afternoon. Two of the people responsible for pulling together the celebration were Mary Pollard (left), of Courtice, who was the convenor, and Sheila Dadson, of Bowmanvillc, who was the historian. Photo albums, press clippings, old-style unifonns and numerous trophies were just some of the items that were on display. 328 RITSON RD.
