8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 28,1993 By Brad Kelly Registrations Galore At "3 on 3" Deadline If procrastination were an illness... I came up with the beginning of that analogy earlier in the week and put off finishing it until just before deadline. Nothing came to me. Ever since school days, when I left book reports -- not just the report but the actual reading of the book and the analysis of it -- until the night before it was due, I have suffered from procrastination. Seems I'm not alone. Next weekend's 3 on 3 tournament at Bowmanville High School was announced on the sports pages of both The Statesman and Weekender for five weeks. The total number of registrations received over that period of time was eight. One week prior to the deadline, that number climbed to 14. Thoughts of whether or not to cancel the tournament did cross my mind. But that all changed last Wednesday. Why? Because it was deadline day. I had just hung my coat up at 8:00 a.m. (actually I was four minutes late because I had put off taking out the garbage Tuesday night) when two calls came in. Both wanted to know if it was too late to register. That was just the beginning. One after another, registration forms were paraded up to the office. By day's end, there were more registrations (16 in all) than had been submitted submitted over the first five weeks. And that night, three messages were left on the answering machine here at the office from teams wondering if they could still get in. When all the juggling finally concluded, 34 teams had gained entry into the tournament. Unfortunately, a couple of teams in the girls' divisions had to be turned away because of a lack of registrations. Also, a couple of teams in the boys' 10-12 and 13-15 age categories missed getting in. This year, the tournament has about as close to an international flavour as it is going to get. The boundaries have been expanded as teams from as far away as Uxbridge, Port Hope, Cobourg and Stouffville will be com- pèting. It should make for an interesting couple of days. Everything gets underway Friday night, with the 10 to 12-year-olds taking to the floor at 6:30 p.m. The night will conclude with the big boys, those in the 16-18 division, who will play their first games at 9:00 p.m. Prior to the start of each team's first game, players will sign in at the registration desk where they will receive their complimentary package. This year, each player will receive a commemorative tank top, a coupon from National Home Video, and a team coupon from Pizza Pizza. Registrations will also be taken at that time for the NBA-stylc 3-point competition on Saturday afternoon. Saturday kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with more preliminary games, followed followed with a one-hour break at noon for the NBA-style 3-point competition. competition. This year, thçre will be a separate contest for both the boys and girls. A couple of surprises are also in the works, but we don't want to mention mention them until they are confirmed. Semi-finals and finals will take place throughout the entire afternoon on Saturday. As mentioned on the registration form, the champions of both the 'A' and 'B' divisions will receive trophies, while 'C' and *D' winners will take home medallions. To ensure that nobody goes home thirsty, the McDonald's Orange Bowl will be filled throughout the weekend for the competitors. The entire tournament will come to a close on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when the 16-18 year old boys take to the court for the 'A' final. It will be the only game going on at that time, allowing everyone an opportunity to see some of the area's best 3 on 3 players in action. We hope that the weekend goes off without any problems. Our aim is to send the kids home feeling that they received their money's worth, but above all, enjoyed themselves.
