|r ; ! fl : 12 The Canadian Statesman TVedUndn,, Bowmanville, Saturday, May 8,1993 Toastmaster Topics Turn Political During April 27 Meeting With political news currently hitting hitting the headlines with regularity, Bowmanville Toastmaster Club got into the political mode at its April 27 meeting. During the Table Topics section of the meeting members were asked to give a one-minute speech in response response to a variety of quotations from politicians and others from the past, such as Napoleoh's famous quote: "If you want to be a success, promise everything, deliver nothing." Mon. « Thurs. 9:00 a.m, « 8:00 p.m. Friday 0:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m, Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. sssaBsssat Chairman Bob Shearman brought attention to the many promises politicians politicians make before elections and let them fall by the wayside afterwards. "Every politician should be required to keep his promises and to account like directors of a company are required required to do." Toastmaster Joe Christl, who was awarded the trophy for the best speech of the evening, agreed saying: "One of the troubles with politicians today is that they know they can make promises and never have to keep them." Entitling his impromptu speech "The March of Folly", he said unless spending is brought into line with income income this country will join the march of folly. Governments cannot spend at rates they have been in the past and simultaneously have Canadians enjoy the standard of living to which they have become accustomed. By spending more money than they take in governments can only increase increase the national debt, which has now reached a critical level, he reminded reminded his audience. Christl cited New Zealand as an example of the folly of unmanageable unmanageable debt. That countiy, he said, almost almost went bankrupt because of uncontrolled uncontrolled spending. The result was a cutback in the social safety net and consequently a lower standard of living, living, at least temporarily. Looking back in time, he said history history has been marked by the rise and fall of political systems. When one system falls another rises to take its place. When czarist Russia fell communism communism rose to take its place, but lasted only 70 years. And with the breakup of the Soviet Soviet Union, he said.scome oddities surfaced such as the Ukraine, which is no larger than the Province of Ontario, Ontario, "has 300 battleships it does not know what to do with." Double honors went to Toastmaster Toastmaster Henry Lise, who not only won the trophy for the best Table Topics presentation presentation of the evening but also the trophy for the best evaluation of a speech. Evaluation is one of the extremely helpful aspects of Toastmasters. A speech given by one member is evaluated evaluated by another as a helpful guide to overcoming weak points, which can be corrected in a subsequent speech. All speeches arc evaluated in this manner. In addition, all other members members arc expected to provide each speaker with brief written comments. During the meeting Toastmaster Connie Nelson, past president of the club, was congratulated on her recent recent election as Division Governor. It will be her responsibility to oversee the more than 10 clubs in the division. division. Bowmanville Toastmaster Club meets at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday in the Parish Hall of St. John's Anglican Church on Temperance Street, a few steps south of King Street. Visitors arc always welcome.
