i The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, May T2,1993 9 Courtice S.S. Baseball Squad Fighting Hard to Make Playoffs by Brad Kelly After eight games of the LOSSA baseball regular season, Courtice Secondary School finds itself in a predicament. Four games remain on their schedule, and it's almost a guarantee guarantee that they need a victory in each of those games to secure a spot in the playoffs. That would be quite a feat for a team that is finding wins hard to come by. Game 1 ivxuuuay tiiivmuuii til oupci Creek Park, they went in search of a couple of victories. Instead, they were swept by O'Neill by scores ol 6-2 and 104. The two losses dropped their record on the year to 1-6-1. Their only win (5-3) and tie (5-5) came against G.L. Roberts. It's a pattern that coach Paul Schultz is all too familiar with from his inexperienced squad. "The first inning has always been disastrous, and now they expect expect it to happen," he said. "They make one error, and then it becomes contagious. Our pitchers aren't strikeout-type pitchers, so they need the defense behind them and they're not getting it." In the opening game, John Drumm went the distance on tire mound for Courtice and. pitched well over his six innings of work. O'Neill struck for three runs in the first inning, and increased their lead to 5-0 with a pair in the fourth. Courtice answered with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but O'Neill added one more in the sixth for a 6-2 final. Dion Landon had a pair of singles singles to lead the Courtice offence. In the second game, five runs by O'Neill in the second inning gave them a 7-3 lead and they were never challenged. Courtice added a single run in the third when Andrew Jamieson scampered scampered home on an error to close the gap to 7-4, But, in the fourth, O'Neill added three more for a 10-4 win. Sam Hare had the big hit in a three-run first inning for Courtice when his double scored a pair of runs. Tyler Dcardon was the starting pitcher in the second game, and was followed by Phil Bortolazzo and Aaron Aaron Morissctlc. Morisseltc looked sharp in his two innings of work, getting out of a jam in the fourth inning with only one pitch, and then keeping O'Neill from adding to their lead in the fifth. Pint Bortolazzo of Courtice Secondary School delivers this pitcl to the plate during a LOSSA league game against O'Neill at Sope Creek Park on Monday afternoon. Courtice were swept in the dou bleheader by scores of 6-2 and 10-4. SCOREBOARD LOSSA Senior Girls' Soccer Standings (as of May 7) Team W L T Pts.
