Thank-you for your sponsorship, Langley Utilities Contracting Ltd. by Brad Kelly There wasn't the slightest bit of disappointment in the voice of Gena Jaspers-Fayer as she recounted her performance at this past weekend's OFSAA Badminton Championships. She didn't win the gold, nor did she expect to. What she did do was play her best, and that was all she could ask •for. Competing against the best senior senior girls' high school badminton players the province has to offer, Jaspers-Fayer placed a respectable seventh in the *B' Flight. "1 was just happy to qualify," said the grade 12 student at Durham Christian High School. "I didn't expect anything out of this tournament. I expected to play my best, but I didn't expect to finish high. If I did, it would have been great." Jaspers-Fayer lost her first match in the OFSAA tournament which was held at Brock University in St. ; Catharines. The loss dropped her to the 'B' Flight in a field which consisted consisted of 32 players/ *T was prepared for my first game because (the opponent) was expected to finish high in the tournament," tournament," said the 17-year-old Bowmanville Bowmanville resident. Not letting the loss in the first round take away her competitiveness, competitiveness, she rebounded to win her next two matches. But, a loss in her fourth match of the tournament eliminated her from further competition. competition. The knowledge that she was up against the best players in Ontario, and the whole mystique that surrounds surrounds a provincial championship made for an intimidating weekend, admitted Jaspers-Fayer. Randy MacDonald Roars to Finish in Sixth Place During Race in Milwaukee During Sunday's running of the Badgcrland 150, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Randy MacDonald had yet another great race. For the second time, MacDonald has been able to finish. Not only in the top ten, but in sixth place. Last weekend's race marked one of the largest fields in ASA history, with a starling grid of more than 40 cars. MacDonald started seventh in a very competitive ASA (American Speed Association) field in front of big-name drivers like Mike Eddie and Ken Schrader. Having good pit stops and staying out of trouble made it easier for MacDonald MacDonald to run with the leaders. MacDonald is one of seven drivers trying to compete for the Rookie of the Year, and with Sunday's great finish, finish, MacDonald has placed himself in a good position for claiming that title. MacDonald, still without a major sponsor, has been fortunate to pick up NTN Bearing on a per-racc basis. The Nashville Network (TNN) will cover, live, ASA's next stop at Nashville, Nashville, May 15-16. Expectations arc high for MacDonald's MacDonald's next race because, in previous competitions in Nashville, he has finished finished well. at OFSAA for Badminton Playeh "It's really intimidating because it is such a big tournament," she said. "You know it's big before you get there, but it's still surprising when you get there and hear about people who play all year and belong to clubs, or are ranked nationally." Qualifying for OFSAA was no easy task, as Jaspers-Fayer had to compete at three different tournaments tournaments before advancing. At the LOSSA East competition held at G.L. Roberts, she finished first overall, and followed that up with another first place finish at the LOSSA meet held in Ajax. At the DYSSAA meet in Ajax, she reached the finals before losing out to a competitor from Bayvicw High School. Her second place finish finish was. good enough for a berth in the OFSAA finals. Her accomplishments to this point in her career are quite remarkable remarkable when you consider she didn't pick up a racquet until grade nine. "I had been involved in all the sports, so I thought I would by this one too," she said. She showed signs of promise last year while competing as a junior. She placed first at DYSSAA, but no OFSAA competition exists for any age group under the senior level. She plans to continue playing : badminton next year at high school, in' an attempt to qualify for the OFSAA OFSAA competition once again. That's good news for Bowman- . ville High School, where she plans . to transfer next year. That is, however, however, bad news for the rest of the senior girls' singles players through- ; out the province. > »! fi vV V - *tf, Ilhi Durham Christian High School student Gena Jaspers-Fayer com- ! peted in the senior girls' singles division at the OFSAA badminton | championships held in St. Catharines this past weekend.
