His good-natured threats to hand out tickets didn't stop crowds from lining up to try and sink him with three throws for a dollar. SL : Kids couldn't pass up a chance "j to have their faces painted by a of Bowmanviile By Sarah Ridley Bonding. You've heard that done before: parents and children, brothers and sisters, grandparents and their grandchildren. But try to imagine 122 high school students spending a whole afternoon doing exactly that. For obvious reasons, the event was called "Bonding Day" and there was even a Bonding Day song by Shawn Lise that introduced it to the student body. The concept of such a day was the brainchild of a former students' council and has become a tradition of DCHS. What is it? An afternoon of fun, games, free food, friendship and getting to know everyone, especially new students, a little better. Why? Because friendship and a sense of belonging belonging is what DCHS is all about. Besides, it's a lot of fun. Bonding Day was not the only exciting exciting thing happening at Durham. Our Phys. Ed. teacher, Jim Vcltman, recently returned from Vancouver, where his lacrosse team, the Brampton Brampton Excelsiors, had for the second year in a row, won the Canadian championship trophy, the Mann cup. They played against Mr. Vcltman's former team, the Coquitlam Adanacs. Mr. Veltman said the teams were very evenly matched; that although the Adanacs were more emotional, the Excelsiors had lots of talent. The Excelsiors won the championship in five of a best-of-seven game series. Mr. Veltman said the third game was the clincher. It was a very crucial game, which his team won in overtime, overtime, Mr. Veltman scoring his only goal of the tournament, the winning goal. Mr. Vcltman is being very modest modest when he says that of himself because because he is an expert at setting up goals for team mates to score. He said the support of Durham really helped him "I'm glad I have so many people behind me. It made it easier, knowing I had support of parents, students and students." We certainly DO support you, Mr. Vcltman, and congratulate you again. Our fall sports program is geared up and rolling. The soccer teams have a number of games scheduled for the upcoming weeks and a tournament tournament next month. Other teams are into preliminary practice. It looks like they arc off to a great start! On a more serious note, Durham is involved in a court case concerning the funding of Christian schools. As a private school and a member of the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools which is the organization fighting the court battle, we arc watching events carefully and support those who challenge challenge the decision not to provide funding.
