For most cottage owners, this is an onerous chore - not just because of the amount of physical work involved involved - but because it hails the end of a season traditionally filled with memories of moonlit canoe rides, hikes through the woods, sailing and swimming in the sun - and just plain fun. But, as the daylight hours begin to wane and the air develops a chilly nip, you realize you can't procrastinate procrastinate any longer: autumn has officially officially arrived and winter will follow shortly. Organize Well in Advance If you organize yourself well enough in advance and get everyone in your family involved in the undertaking, undertaking, you'll find the job goes much faster and is far less depressing. To start, make a comprehensive list of all the things that need to be done. Then prioritize them and - depending depending on the amount of responsibility responsibility involved - assign them to various various family members. Once you've done this, figure out ' exactly what you need to take with you to do the job (cleaning supplies, tools for repairs, etc.) Don't plan on taking a lot of clothes or food items if you intend to bring a lot of things from the cottage back with you. Take only the bare essentials. Do make sure you have an adequate adequate supply of bags and boxes and other containers to haul things back in. Outdoors Keep in mind that this is your last chance to check the exterior of your cottage to see if there arc any items that need repair - like loose or missing missing shingles, loose siding, any holes or gaps, loose windows and clogged, loose or broken cavcstroughs or downspouts. It's a good idea to trim any branches that arc hanging too close to windows or the roof. When these become become laden down with heavy snowfall, snowfall, they can cause serious damage. If you have any storage sheds or a boathouse, check to see that they are in good shape as well. After all, you don't want to face an endless list of repairs next spring. If your cottage has a chimney, it's a good idea to make sure the top is securely protected with an animal- proof cap. A proper cap should help keep any curious animals from setting up a cozy retreat in your cottage during the winter months. These caps can usually be purchased inexpensively at local building centres or hardware stores. High and Dry When removing boats from the water, make sure they're well- drained before storing them. If you have a sailboat, it's important to make sure the sail is dry before storing storing it; otherwise, you could end up with mould and mildew next spring. The same common-sense approach approach applies to outdoor furniture - make sure everything is clean and dry before storing. (Keep in mind that it will probably be easier to clean off any grime now as opposed to next spring). Indoors Indoors, cottage closing duties usually involve lighter tasks - and this is an area where your youngsters can be a big help. While it's important to remove all perishable items, it's also advisable to pack up any tinned goods, because they can freeze and split over the course of the winter. (If you've ever accidentally left a carbonated beverage beverage tin in the freezer in an attempt to cool it, you know what kind of mess this can make.) You may opt to leave a few staples staples behind in air-tight storage containers, containers, but again - make sure they arc well-secured against any mice that might mosey in during the fall. Check Interior As Well It's a good idea to check around the interior of your cottage for any cracks or holes that might allow four- footed visitors to gain entry. If you spot any holes or gaps, seal them up with the appropriate sealant. Fridges should be defrosted and disconnected. You may also want to leave the fridge door open a little bit before you leave. This will help you avoid facing an unpleasant odor when you return next spring. In addition to foodstuffs, you may also want to take home items like bedding and towels which may become become musty or mildewy if left in a damp, cold cottage all winter. And, depending on how safe your area is, you may want to take back some of your small appliances and valuables - like a microwave, television television or VCR - just in case there are any break-ins. Before you leave, don't forget to turn off the water supply and disconnect disconnect the pipes at the pump, to keep them from freezing and possibly bursting. The pump, tank and lines should be drained before you depart. eue VACATION AT HOME Play golf, tennis, lawn bowling or take a walk on the beach, all near this 2- bedroom, maintenance-free home, large living room and kitchen with walkout to wrap-around deck. $69,900.
