During the past two decades the folk wisdom wisdom that "pets are good for you" has been supported by research research that demonstrates the benefits benefits of animals on people's health. Waltham, the world's leading authority on pet care and nutrition, nutrition, has played a major role in this research by funding a variety variety of studies, supporting 60 projects projects in 14 countries worldwide. Two Waltham Fellowships are currently investigating the health and social benefits derived derived from pets. One study taking place in the Netherlands is examining examining the role of dogs in the social and cognitive development development of children, while the other at the University of Guelph is measuring the impact of pet ownership on the health of the elderly. Some other recent studies include include research on pet ownership ownership and risk factors for cardiovascular cardiovascular disease, the value of pets for health and recovery and the long-term effects of pet ownership ownership on human health. One three-year Australian study, conducted at the Baker Medical Institute and published in the prestigious Medical Journal Journal of Australia last September, discovered that pet owners had lower values of several known risk factors (including lower cholesterol levels) for the development development of cardiovascular diseases diseases compared to those who did not own pets. The Institute is currently assessing whether acquiring a pet may be good heart therapy and, if so,' it may become part of a dmg-free alternative alternative program. A noted University of Pennsylvania Pennsylvania study conducted by Erika Friedmann revealed that pet owners (regardless of type of pet) were more likely to be alive one year after discharge from a coronary care unit than were patients without pets. In fact, it was found that pets enhanced enhanced the recovery of their owners in a manner independent independent of the severity of the attack. Another 10-month study investigated investigated changes in behavior and health status in adults following following the acquisition of a new dog or cat. The results suggest that the mere acquisition of a pet can lead to fewer minor health problems and increased self-esteem, indicating that the positive effects of pet ownership ownership on human health may be more significant than previously previously recognized. And an American study confirmed by work carried out at England's University of Swansea, suggests suggests that merely playing with a pet can help lower blood pressure. pressure. Pets also have a special relationship relationship with children. They ' teach kids about non-verbal communication and instill in them a respect for nature. A study study conducted in Cambridge, England, discovered that the relationship relationship between children and their parents was better in petowning petowning families and that the greater number of pets owned, the better the child's social competence. "The association between man and dogs and cats goes back thousands: of years," says Hilary Watson, health care specialist specialist for the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, which sponsors sponsors regular symposiums dedicated dedicated to the study of pets. "The first reported therapeutic use of animals dates back to the ninth century when caring for animals animals was thought to re-establish the harmony of body and soul. In Europe, the practice, has continued through the centuries and is now being explored in North America." The Human Animal Bond Association Association of Canada (HABAC) is a growing organization with a mandate to study human-animal interaction and improve the understanding understanding of the therapeutic relationship between people and pets. HABAC supports the use of animals in therapeutic programs and co-operates with like minded organizations across Canada and around the world. The 10-year-old Pet Access League Society (PALS) in Calgary Calgary is one of several organizations organizations in Canada's that believe patient interaction with pets results results in a variety of benefits. Canada's largest organization that facilitates pet visitation with 400 volunteers and.-500 dogs and cats, PALS, visits hospitals, hospitals, nursing homes and young offenders' centers, regularly regularly but also makes special visits visits upon request. In Ontario, the Hamilton Society Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has an extensive visiting pet program, program, which services area hospitals, hospitals, including psychiatric institutions, institutions, chronic and continuing continuing care facilities and convalescent convalescent centers. Clearly, the presence of and interactions with pets can have significant influences on human physiology and psychology. While various suggestions have been made as to why pets may be beneficial to health, the bottom bottom line is that peopje give and get love from pets - and that can only be a good thing.
