The Liberals won such support because voters were unwilling to face reality, he said. "They saw this sort of fuzzy warmth with the Liberals", he said. People figured that by going back to the Liberals , they could avoid the deficit and avoid coming to grips with the problems facing the country country today. Supporters at Reform Party headquarters headquarters in Oshawa were, by turns, celebrating party gains in western Canada while accepting the news of defeat in their own riding. The Reform Party had not run before in Durham, but still managed to come away with 18,500 votes, which left the Conservatives trailing trailing in third place. This was the first time a Reform candidate's name has appeared on the ballot in Durham Riding. Defeated, but not down, Reform candidate Ian Smyth (above) kept on top of poll results as soon as totals were available Monday night. Smyth said he was pleased with Reform's showing. Not only did the Reform Party win over many old-line Conservatives, Conservatives, Smyth said, but it attracted a large youth vote too. Young voters realize they will be the ones who'll wind up paying for the spending habits of today's elected leaders if tilings don't change, he explained. The crowd at Christian Heritage Party headquarters was in a hopeful mood as the earliest results started coming in. In Durham, the CHP gained 705 votes, down from 1,665 in the last federal election. Durham's CHP candidate, Durk Bruinsma, was encouraged by news that CHP candidates in the west had a good showing in some preelection preelection polls. He told his supporters gathered at the King Street office Monday night that they had done a good job. "We have told this riding that we are here. We have gotten the word out." ' Harry Pope of the National Party was in fifth place with 1,220 votes; Judy Hurvid of the Green Party came away with 349 votes; and The Natural Law Party candidate Mi- chcal Larmand got 270 votes. ONTARIO GOVERNMENT NOTICE Initial Public Notice Highway 401 Westbound Truck Inspection Station Site Location Study Municipality of Clarington, Regional Municipality of Durham WP2501-89-00 THE STUDY The Ministry of Transportation has initiated a study to examine potential sites for a truck inspection station in the westbound Highway 401 corridor, between the Oshawa-Clarington border and Highway 35/115 in the Municipality of Clarington, Regional Municipality of Durham. The existing station west of Bennett Road is obsolete, and, subject to the outcome of the study, will be expanded or replaced. This study will identify an appropriate location for a new or expanded truck inspection station, considering transportation and engineering issues along side natural and social environmental factors. THE PROCESS This study will follow a Provincial Highways Class Environmental Assessment process approved for projects of this type. A Public Information Centre will be held during the study; a notice advising of its time and location will be published in local papers. Upon completion of the study, an Environmental Study Report will be available for public review and comment. Another notice will be published at that time, There is an opportunity at any time during this process for public input. If you feel that, after consulting with MTO staff, serious concerns remain unresolved, it is your right to request that the study be subject to an Individual Environmental Assessment, The decision rests with the Minister of the Environment and Energy.
