2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, November 10,1993 .Week in Review- Rotary Club Makes $16,000 Donation to Memorial Hospital Councillor Objects to Mileage Claims Bowmanvillc's regional councillor councillor is continuing his battle to curtail mileage expenses claimed by members members of municipal council. Councillor Ken Hooper said some members of Clarington Council Council are, in effect, claiming mileage to drive to work. And he adds that such claims run contrary to the bylaw bylaw which controls mileage claims. "Nowhere in the by-law does it say you get paid to drive to work," Councillor Hooper said. He stated the by-law is currently being interpreted to mean that if a citizen requested a meeting at the municipal administrative centre in Bowmanville, that councillor could be reimbursed for driving from home to the municipal hall. The councillor added that nowhere in the by-law does it say that that mileage would be paid in this situation. The councillor pointed out that one-third of a municipal politician's salary is tax-free and that the tax- free privilege is intended to cover the costs of serving as an elected official. official. Councillor Hooper is hoping to see the by-law re-worded so that its meaning cannot be stretched to the point where elected officials can claim mileage for driving to work. In the meantime, he will object to mileage claims which appear to be outside the intention of the by-law. That amount has been reduced from 34 corns per kilometre. Still on the topic of municipal spending, Councillor Hooper also said he objects to the bill for a luncheon hosted by Mayor Diane Hamrc at a Whitby restaurant on October 27. After the announcement of the S13.4 million agreement settling settling outstanding financial and legal matters between Ontario Hydro and Clarington, Mayor Hamrc invited regional councillors and some of the local and regional staff to lunch. Councillor Hooper said the cost was S500 and the municipality picked up the tab. "I said I don't agree \yiih-it- and I will openly say in council 1 don't agree with it," die councillor stated. On Thursday, November 4th, members of the Bowmanville Rotary Club presented two defibrillators to the emergency department of Memorial Hospital. With the' new units, medical teams will be able to I L r\U t r n A monitor and revive heart patients. The value of the defibrillators is $16,000. The local Rotary Club JOD Uîîer tor t.U.U. raised funds for the units through hosting a dinner auction, several car washes, a Murder Mystery and other events. It was decided to defer the decision decision until councillors had time to interview interview other potential EDO candidates. candidates. The need for an EDO was expressed expressed by the Mayor's Task Force on Economic Development earlier this year. He still needs to set up an office in Ottawa, and in his riding. Here, he is seriously looking at north Oshawa or Courtice as locations locations for a riding office. He figures on using his Saturday mornings in Port Perry to see constituents in that area. When he isn't in his riding, he'll be in Ottawa or taking the train back and forth from Ottawa to Oshawa. Port Granby Site From Page One Phase Three dated Nov. 26, 1990, it is stated that the long-term erosion is the main problem "facing the wastes currently stored at the Port Granby facility." "In nearby areas along the shore of Lake Ontario which are similar, the erosion rate of the bluff is estimated estimated at 30 centimetres per year. However, due to the disruption of water flow patterns by the dumping of material in the gorges, the erosion has been accelerated at the Port Granby site and is estimated at one meter per year." The current CLG is dedicated to finding a better location for this waste material to be placed.
