4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 10,1993 Rotary Club Learns More About Better Business Bureau mywi'jmrgin--Bi Clubs and Organizations Mayor Addresses B&P Club Members The president of the Better Business Bureau, Paul Tuz (centre), was the keynote speaker at the Thursday, Thursday, November 4th, meeting of the Bowmanvillc Rotary Club. Mr. Tuz told club members that the BBB provides information about new and existing businesses and investigates complaints. The Bureau was founded in the 1920's. Thanking the guest for his informative comments are Rotary vice-president Dr. Chuck Cattran (left) and Ro tari an Ernie Harvey (right). by Lorraine Manfredo At one time, dishonest merchants risked being tarred and feathered by angry vigilantes. Today, crooked dealers who don't wind up in jail on fraud charges can count on being exposed by the Better Business Bureau. Better Business Bureau President, Paul Tuz, was the featured speaker at die November 4th meeting of the Bowmanvillc Rotary Club. Tuz came to Canada from Europe at age 13 and eventually earned degrees degrees at two American universities. As president of the BBB, he has been weeding out the scam artists from the honest business folk for three decades. The organization has been around since the 1920's, which according according to Tuz, was around the same time that tarring and feathering went out of style. The BBB is not. a government agency, he told Rotarians. Nor is it a consumer advocate group or a trade association. "We are an information service; a clearing house of information," he said. "It's like an ocean out there. You're looking at 6,000 new businesses businesses opening in Ontario per week." That figure includes everything from federally incorporated companies companies to sole proprietorships. "On the other hand, there are 6,000 business going under per week. The waves roll in and the waves roll out." And there is no up-to-date publication publication that can hope to keep track of it all. But the BBB stays abreast of business business start-ups and failures because it takes its leads directly from concerned consumers. Investigators handle hundreds of thousands of inquiries and complaints every year, said Tuz. He said the vast majority of complaints complaints that come through the BBB can be resolved to the satisfaction of both parties once tempers die down and the exact nature of the customer's complaint is identified. Most business owners arc happy to oblige a reasonable reasonable re'quest. In the case of a real impasse, however, however, the BBB will recommend and supply mediation or arbitration, with similar success. For a business to get accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, it must satisfy three criteria: 1. It must have been established for one year 2. It must be free of charges con- ■ ■ w. 11 •j ;■! fÿ • Install a high efficiency gas, oil or propane furnace and receive UP to $500 TRADE-IN on your old furnace when you purchase a CARRIER FURNACE High-efficiency gas furnace can save you up to 65% on your heating billsl Heating & Air Conditioning Bowmanville/Newcastle 436-3212 • Oshawa/Whitby 428-0333 irary to consumer protection legislation legislation 3. It must abide by a professional code of ethics During his years with the BBB, Paul Tuz has come across many unscrupulous unscrupulous operations. One scam that sticks in his mind is the one by "Mafia International Brotherhood," Brotherhood," à registered company capitalizing capitalizing on the reputation of the infamous infamous underworld gang. "Mafia International Brotherhood" sent out application forms to 80,000 shops in Toronto asking that shopkeepers shopkeepers mail in an annual "fee" of $250. "Imagine the terror some of these store-owners felt, many of whom were not schooled in this country," Tuz said. To find the source of the offending flyers, Paul Tuz contacted a business owner with known Mafia connections and asked if the flyer was the work of the real mob. It wasn't. So BBB investigators traced the founder of the "Mafia International Brotherhood" through official registration registration documents. "The man is now serving a sentence sentence in Illinois" said Tuz. He related other stories to show that not all attempted rip-offs are as blatant. j As an example, Tuz cited the c^se of vendors who wanted $20 for a pack of $2 garbage bags, "to support tiV handicapped." i What often ends up happening, hi 1 says, is that the buyer overpays for the product and very little of the big profi actually goes to the cause. It pays to be careful where you charitable dollars go, he advises. "Be cause they don't always lie to you They don't con you. You con yourself." yourself." The guest was thanked by. Rotari- an Ken Hockin and presented with a token of appreciation from acting president Chuck Cattran. The Bowmanvillc Business and Professional Women's Club members members were pleased to have Mayor Diane Hamrc inform them of current happenings in our region at their October October meeting. We've seen a lot of upgrading and expanding of sidewalks in Clarington and Mayor Hamre said the need in this recessionary economy must be recognized with not everyone able to own 2 or 3 cars. Club members and guests were assured assured of council's commitment to the Courtice Complex as was the past council. There is currently currently a sidewalk patrol, with bike patrol patrol commencing in the spring. In conclusion.
