And, to this day, that simple line she whispered to no one in particular particular has served as an inspiration to her career after skiing. She has developed a noncompetitive noncompetitive ski club, has a regular feature on TSN's Ski Base, and is a freelance journalist for a number of ski magazines. If that isn't enough, she has also been selected as a color commentator commentator for the freestyle skiing event during during CTV's coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics from Norway. Though she does admit to having a rather hectic schedule, she wouldn't trade it for a return to the freestyle skiing circuit. "When I was training and competing competing three to five hours every day, it was exhausting," said Gardner. "It can be an incredible life, but it is draining." In addition to all of the above projects, she still manages to find time every month to visit schools as a representative of the Female Athletes Athletes Motivating Excellence (FAME) program. A number of female female speakers with a variety of spprts backgrounds talk to kids about the rewards of participating in sports. The emphasis is on the act of participating participating as opposed to the misconception misconception of achieving victory each time out. "Winning is nice, but it isn't the only thing there is in sports," she told the kids. Although Gardner became accustomed accustomed to posting wins at world calibre calibre competitions as her career pr°- ■gjessed, she didn't start out the . "ijltipn of the mountain. .; v f, ■ ;"|At her first World Cup compétitif, compétitif, she came last. It wasn't until hdir third year in the sport that she achieved a bronze medal. : "By winning a medal, I knew that if I continued to work hard, I could be one of the best." That certainly came true. A member of Canada's national team from 1981-89, she achieved a status as one of the best in the world. She won 79 World Cup medals, of; which 21 were gold. There were also 14 National Championship medals, and recognition by an American magazine in 1988 as the Freestyle Skier of the Year. But her biggest achievements World Champion Freestyle Skier, Meredith Gardner, puts the wrong type of mask on Ontario Street Public School student Jessica Kleebaum during a presentation at the school last week.
