This stress comes from the extra demands, both financial and emotional, placed on an already overloaded schedule. For others, it stirs up memories and disappointment that life is not always the way it should be. Certain people are missing from the scene. They are lonely while everyone else is having fun. It's all too easy to get caught up in the Christmas rush and forget the holiday season is a time for affirming affirming commitment to friends and family family and community. We get too busy and distracted to appreciate the true meaning of the holidays. Stress is not something that simply simply happens to us. We have a great deal of control over what causes us to feel stressed, and our stress response. response. There are many things we can do to improve our holiday cheer and maximize our enjoyment of this special time of year. Here are some helpful hints: Prioritize goals and plan accordingly. accordingly. Take a few minutes and think about the holiday season and what needs to be done. What really makes the season meaningful and special for you and your family? Involve family members and delegate some of the necessary chores. Shopping, baking and decorating can be a fun and special family time. Don't add extra financial strain by going overboard overboard on gifts. Stay within your means. A thoughtful gift given with love means so much more. Children don't need everything they see on TV. This is a good time to let kids help out with making something or giving some toys to those less fortunate. fortunate. This can be very fulfilling. Organize a list and check things off. Start early. A sense of control helps turn distress into eustress (good stress.) Create positive expectations and exercise your options and be flexible flexible to accommodate others' needs and wishes. Stress is often caused, not so much by what is happening, but rather by our perception of what is happening. We are the only ones responsible responsible for how we perceive a situation. situation. Focus on the good things and special family rituals, not on the negative ones. What are some of the things you can do to make the gathering gathering as pleasant as possible? Take time out for relaxation and exercise. End your day with a nice bath using epsom salts or herbal bath oil. Chamomile is a relaxant, peppermint is ân energizer. Try not to cut out those activities that are so vital for recharging. Take the time to schedule a relaxation massage or reflexology treatment. Exercise helps us to relax and to re- oxygenate those tired muscles. Diet is also very important. Make sure we keep a balance. Increase your intake of foods rich in Vitamin B such as green, leafy vegetables, wheat germ, molasses. These are natural stress reducers and have a relaxing effect on the body. Minimize Minimize your caffeine, pop and alcohol intake, as these all have a stress effect effect on the body. Relaxing sleep -- try a hot cup of tea with honey or lemon such as chamomile before bedtime. Hopefully, these helpful hints will help us all enjoy the true meaning meaning of the holiday season.
